"Very, Very Nice Hotel Except for the Loud and Inconsistent HVAC"

6.0

Outstanding cleanliness, decor, service, and free breakfast was really, really good. The HVAC system whines loudly, going on and off, and then rumbles at times as if a train were going by right outside your window--rumbles loud enough you feel like the room should be shaking, but it isn't. Inconsistent thermostat. We would go to bed cold, bundling up (which is fine) and then in the middle of the night we'd have to throw all the covers off because we woke up sweating. If the HVAC didn't keep waking us up and allowed us to sleep better, the rating would be really high. Soft bed (which I like, my wife wants firm). Outstanding property and service otherwise, and really nice location safe walking distance to some great restaurants, and easy accessibility to Midway or Ohare.

"Cannot recommend because of fees."

4.0

Globalist review. Avoid if you expect fair treatment during disruptions. I’m a Hyatt Globalist and I spend 60+ nights a year in Hyatt properties (plus more with Marriott). I booked Hyatt Place Chicago/Wicker Park using a Free Night Award. This weekend’s winter storm was severe. Airlines were waiving rebooking fees, events were being canceled, and travel safety was clearly at risk. Our theater show was canceled and travel conditions were deteriorating. We called the hotel Friday night to cancel. The hotel response was unacceptable. They removed my Free Night Award and charged me an additional $175. When I asked for any flexibility given the storm and cancellations, the assistant manager, Judy, would only cite “policy.” The tone was confrontational, not service-focused. Hotels can have cancellation policies. What is indefensible is the double-dip outcome: take the award and charge cash anyway, during a weather disruption that caused widespread cancellations. I want Hyatt corporate to review this and make it right. Refund the $175 and reinstate the Free Night Award. Until then, I cannot recommend this property.
