Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort

The staff were very, very friendly. I had a lovely walk around the two golf courses. I had a sandwich in the bar that was perfectly little and I enjoyed my stay. Oh, and I had a very nice massage in the spa.

Easy walk from train station with scenic path through golf course. Comfortable spacious room. Fantastic swimming pool with lots of natural light and not busy with people, good gym, friendly staff. Tasty sandwiches still available just after 9pm from bar.

Breakfast only average with limited buffet and no black pudding available at the time with the cooked breakfast!

Restaurant food was extremely overpriced and poor quality. Room was very dated and not overly clean for a 4star

Nice swimming pool and golf course looks good. This hotel is for golfers attending the course not for anyone looking for value for money or good service in a hotel experience.

The rooms are tired, not properly cleaned. The walls are paper thin. We were surprised by the room. When entering, we noticed thick dust on everything, decided to just rectify the issue by cleaning it ourselves rather than go back and complain and wait for the room to be cleaned. The walls are thin- 3am there was an issue with loud guests in the hall singing and drunkenly talking, however turned to screaming and threatening when challenged - no phone in the room to contact reception so had to find the number and use my mobile which would have been fine but reception wasn’t being manned and to contact the out of hours manager you needed to attend reception and dial for them at their phone. Breakfast was a massive rip off. We were told to purchase it on the door rather than at check in. Then advised on the door that the price was £24 instead of £18 due to not advanced booking it. We then found out once seated that there is a surcharge for anything that wasn’t a fried breakfast of £5. £29 for avocado on toast is beyond ridiculous. The buffet- was out of cups, no side plates, no milk and the toaster broke. Our breakfasts took over 1hour, and then we were told they had run out of mushrooms so that’s all there is. The staff were passive aggressive, or a rabbit in the headlights. Needless to say we will never be staying in a McDonald hotel again

The staff were friendly and helpful My husband left his phone in room and a member of staff drove to train station to get it to us! Went above and beyond to help

Rooms were tired and shabby but a good size Breakfast was poor for the price

Location with a golf course

I paid for breakfast up front knowing that it started at 06:30. At 7 I still had not had a cup of coffee as the breakfast facilities were still be laid out. I had to leave for onward travel with no breakfast

The staff were friendly.

The shower didn’t work properly. The water from the kettle tasted unpleasant. The steam room was dirty and had missing tiles. There were insufficient sockets and none next to the bed. Limited vegetarian options and the food was just ok.
