"Displeasing ... the service, shortages and no air conditioner!"

2.0

We were on an all-around Siciliy family holiday and we decided to stay for the night at a hotel close to Syracuse. We were looking at various hotels available around the area but were quite amazed by the alluring pictures and reviewes of this hotel, so we decided to book it. Walking in to and around this hotel felt like a walk in paradise, but soon after it turned into hell. We booked a Junior Suite for 4 adults, but when we walked in we immediatley noticed that this could only accomodate 3 adults. It consisted of a double bed and a single seater sofa bed. We politely asked the receptionist how come the room provided is for 3 and not 4 and if perhaps another single seater sofa bed can be provided. The receptionist offered us another double room, for which we were going to be charged additionally. Obviously, we weren't happy to pay more, but if that was the only solution, we were happy to proceed. But before accepting the offer, we asked if there is another room available with a double sofa bed and she immediately said yes, we have one on the ground floor. So I thought, why weren't we offered this immediately? We moved all of our stuff to the new room and settled in. We were quite happy with it, even though we noticed some shortages, which in our opinion shouldn't be visible in a 4 star hotel. There were big chunks of wall plaster underneath the window, basically this was coming off. The bathroom had no ventilation whatsover and the extractor was not even plugged in. We didn't complain about these shortages as we felt that they would not really impact us. When we were back to our room after dinner, we switched on the AC as the room was quite hot and stuffy. We noted that this wasn't functioning properly so we asked the recptionist about it. She informed us, that AC's are switched on from the rooms but it will be activated by the receptionist. Quite strange, never experienced such thing. We went to sleep and it turned out to be the most disturbing night ever. The AC was not functioning properly, the room felt like a sauna, the temprature inside the room was reading 31degrees. Half way through the night, I went to the reception desk to ask for a fan. There was nobody at the desk, but i could hear snorring coming from the hall. I looked around and found the receptionist on duty sleeping on the sofa. Funnily enough the ones who paid (i.e. us) could not get any sleep cause of the heat but the one who was getting paid was having the deepest sleep ever. I tried calling him but wasn't successful. When I went back to the room the others got really upset about this, so one of us, went back and managed to walk the receptionist up. He came to our room and apologised about the matter. He was very understanding and showed empathy. He said I can understand that the room was too hot to sleep in and that they do not have any fans to provide us with. He offered us another room but it only had one double bed. 1 bed for 4 adults isn't really a good solution, so instead, we left the door open as the corridor had lots of cold air. He also told us that he will speak to the managment in the morning and give us a discount for the inconvience casued. We managed to sleep from 5am till 8.30am (with the door open). That morning we packed our bags and left. During the check out we informed the receptionist about how bad the situation was etc. and that we had been told by the receptionist on night duty that we will be given a discount. She kept on insisting that a discount will not be given and in fact we weren't. At the reception desk, there were other clients who had the same issue and they complained about it too.

"NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED"

2.0

we arrived at the hotel around 8:30pm, we had dinner around 9 pm ... a bit of pasta and charged us 40 Euro per head which was very expensive considering we had only pasta. we booked through booking.com ( juniour suite which had to be a room for 4 people ) when we opened the room we found one bed and an armchair that opens up to a very small single bed , we went to receptionist and they changed the room again . we entered the new room which was ok but still not cleaned. we slept and all woke up in the middle of the night the aircondtion wasnt working, went to the receptionist which he was sleeping on the sofa and we couldnt wake him up . he woke up and said the aircondition is not working and he can give us another room but we have to sleep all 4 in one bed . we asked for a fan, they did not have . he told us they will talk to us in the morning for a discount. we woke up in the morning everybody complaining the airconditions were not working. the receptionist told us we had a problem but we cant give you any discount... didnt expect this from a 4 star hotel ...

"Comfortable but old-fashioned and somewhat impersonal"

6.0

Visited this hotel for a 3-night stay. Comfortable and large room with balcony/terrace, but quite old-fashioned, and a door lock that was not functioning very well. Metal terrace chairs and table that were not clean and quite rusty. Good bed. Getting there may be difficult, as it is quite remote, and some GPS's may lead you over an unpaved uneven road that is impossible to take without damaging your car, especially if you have low ground clearance. Approach it from the SS115 on the east side. Due to parking away from entrance and loose pebbles/grit road surface it is awkward to get big or heavy luggage easily into the hotel room, especially because there is no elevator either. The entrance gate is locked after 23:00, you then have to press a button and wait until the staff open the gate - some are not that good with English There is airco which you might think you control from within your room, but there is actually a master airco switch for each room at the reception desk, and you have to ask reception to switch the airco on. This place could do with an overhaul (e.g. towel rack almost coming out of the wall). Breakfast is ok, not special and is the typical Italian majority of sweet stuff. But make sure you get to it fairly early. If there is a busload of tourists they usually get theirs early, and refills are usually not done.Sometimes coffee and tea are only available of you ask the waiter. Some of the staff are friendly, others seem indifferent. Their rules state you cannot consume your own food/drinks in your room (???). Bit weird, after all, you rent a room for a night and should be able to decide what you want to do there, as long as you do not damage anything. And especially weird because the restaurant/bar is not always open. Wifi was only functional if your room is close to the central hallway. You can drive to old town Syracuse in 10 minutes. Make sure you have a car or other transport. This hotel rates the lowest of all 4 hotels we stayed in during our Sicily holiday.
