After having to cancel numerous holidays due to being a live-in carer experiencing last-minute emergencies I had the opportunity to actually get away - the operative word is ‘away.’ Arrived after 23:00 on first night and was offered a free lunch to compensate for missing dinner. The pizzas are especially nice in the main bar. The half-board dinner is what you expect for buffet stuff, but I’m still here and will explore the other options. Breakfast is very good. Free two-hour spa session - yet to take advantage. This is an adults-only hotel but it’s not an old folks’ home. There is a good mix of ages and nationalities. The pool(s) area is especially nice and relaxing - there is a nicely-shaded area where I spend most of my time (I burn like a ginger vampire). The two main areas are served by their own bars. The pool level has a diner bar. There is a constant stream of 1980s music playing in the background of every public area - they put out an additional PA speaker in the main pool area once it gets busy. So far there hasn’t been any SAW stuff…. It’s not intrusive and I’ve found myself singing along and even miming a few bass-lines. That’s a personal thing… The main bar holds the entertainment - Thursday was karaoke, Saturday was some futuristic Abba thing. It has a massive video display but I haven’t experienced a session yet. I am worryingly sleeping early… The staff need a special mention. I have rarely met a better calibre of accommodating and friendly staff. I am a retired chef who worked in corporate hotels and these folk deserve every cash tip you can spare. One really weird thing, and a bit relevant - my room is at the farthest corner and the approach is weirdly liminal. Just an architectural thing. Issues? The toilets beside reception could do with hand-dryers that don’t feel like an asthmatic kitten dying in your hands. My room is fine - I’m a solo traveller. The bathroom has a tunnel of a walk/stroll-in shower. The water pressure could be a bit better but, considering the hotel has six floors with room numbers x001 to x51 it’s understandable. The company advertises its attempts at reducing its carbon footprint - if every room had a power shower it would be almost akin to a USA AI data centre in power consumption. You can only power so much with solar panels. Each room has a balcony. I have a south-east-facing (sea-ish-view) room that picks up the sun until late morning. At this moment I have a few (genuine) shandies and am feeling the most chilled for years. I wish my stay was longer. Malgrat de Mar is a smallish town which will become more popular with tourists. It is perfectly situated and I hope it will prosper, rather than suffer, from the tourist trade.
