"Looks cool but not a good hotel room"

4.0

No coffee maker, no drawers for clothes, noisy room, no heating (it was 62F in San Diego) no shelf in bathroom for toiletries, room smelled of partying... WiFi terrible.

"Mid-century modern decor in a modest property that would be great for walkers."

8.0

Booked a one-night stay in this interesting property that sits on a busy street in the modest part of the Point Loma area of San Diego. Point Loma has some very expensive residential real estate but Rosecrans Street is not an especially attractive thoroughfare. But it is only a block away from a harbor area that offers some nice views and restaurant options. The Pearl is also walking distance to the entrance to Shelter Island, which has very attractive walking paths. The hotel itself resembles a converted small courtyard apartment, with a small pool in the central courtyard. The decor is mid-century modern, a theme that is well-carried-out throughout the complex. We stayed in a room described as "Grand Pearl," which appears to be larger than most others. In general, the rooms in the property seem smaller than standard California hotel rooms. Our room had a small balcony but the views were mostly of the apartment next door, so not especially inviting. Other things of note about the room: bathrobes were provided and there was adequate lighting and outlets where you would want them. Our room had a small desk and chair, but no sofa or easy chair. The room also had no mini-fridge, coffee maker, or safe. But the room and bed were very comfortable and the A/C system was modern, quiet and efficient. Another nice touch: there was a snack of fancy potato chips and two bottles of water left for us, along with a welcome note. (I don't know whether that is provided to everyone or only those with Hyatt status.) The pool area, though modest, looked inviting. There is also a cool-looking bar that sits alongside the pool and probably provides a great social hub when the hotel is busier, such as during the summer. There is no restaurant at the hotel but many places to eat within a few blocks. One of the best things about our short stay was our interaction with the staff. The two staff people we met were friendly, helpful concerning the property, and provided tips for nearby restaurants. My feeling is that The Pearl would be fine for a night or two but is a bit limited in size and amenities for a longer stay.

"Just like (my former) home...same old Point Loma neighborhood. Farmiliar and convenient."

10.0

I lived across the street from The Pearl for four years -- 2020 to 2024. Literally, directly across the street. I walked past it all the time whenever I'd go out for happy Hour or go to the ATM at the Banner Bank branch on the next corner to grab some cash pr deposit a check. I recall going to the bar there once, but I never really knew much about the place or even thought about it. Once I gave up the Point Loma apartment and moved to Los Cabos full-time, whenever I am in the States to visit or run errands I like to be close to my old neighborhood since I still bank there, still shop at the Ralph's on Rosecrans and like to eat at Pizza Nova and a few other great places at the marina. In fact, I ususally stay at the Best Western on Shelter Island and hang out at Club Marina or Point Break or one of the other hotel bars at the end of the island. But this time I stayed at The Pearl to hit my 5th Hyatt brand stay for the brand explorer program and collect my free night. It was totally worth the $230 too! The bed in that room -- which was fabulous -- was insanely comfortable. I slept like a rock! And the food at the newer restaurant was amazing. I had the wagyu butta-burger with fries, which was absolutely killer!!! The cheesy potato soup looked so tempting, I almost ordered that as well. I'll probably stay there again, seeing as I'm in the La Jolla or Pt. Loma area for a night or two about once a month. I really adore the fact they were playing reruns of Flipper on the TV at the bar and overlooking the swimming pool, too. Very cool. Reminded me of summertime in elementary school on the Red Hill Country Club Swim Team. My sister and I would always watched an episode of Flipper in the morning, at like 7 AM, before my mom took us to swim practice and stroke technique, during summer vacation. But I'm sentimental like that...

Enjoyed the bar, restaurant and movie night. Great ambience and vibe!

Would have been nice to have in room coffee/tea. Hotel provided coffee/tea downstairs, but not until 7:00 am.
