Daiwa Roynet Hotel Wakayama

Great view of the castle from "castle view" rooms. Room was a little cramped with 2 people considering how far out of the big cities Wakayama is, but functional. The capsule bathroom was a decent size at least, including a bath long enough to stretch your legs out in. Buffet breakfast was quite good, there's an omelette chef, good quality fresh fruit, and a decent coffee machine, along with the regular spread you expect in a Japanese hotel buffet. Honestly though, the view of the castle is the best thing about it. Check in and check out is via electronic kiosks which support multiple languages. They also act as change machines if you happen to need coins for the laundry. Front counter staff were super helpful when we had questions about train station parking at Hashimoto for our trip to Koyasan (it's better just to drive the whole way if you can). There's a few restaurants on the lower floors of the building, as well as a Family Mart. Was convenient for us when the weather turned sour and we still had to get dinner yet. Price-wise, I thought it was very affordable, but after staying there I have a better understanding of why it's so cheap....

Arriving by car was super awkward, especially at night. The hotel reception is on the 5th floor and there's no concierge on the ground level, no obvious car park entrance, nor any signs about where to park. We were hoping to drop our bags and get some guidance on what to do with our rental car and instead had to figure it out for ourselves (difficult if you can't read kanji). We ended up parking in the multi story car park across the road from the rear entrance, which luckily turned out to be the car park the hotel uses, but we didn't figure that out until after we checked in. Also, even with the hotel discount the cost was Y1000/day. The ticket at least allows unlimited re-entries for the dates of your stay, but there are dozens of off street car parks within spitting distance that are cheaper by the day if you're not planning to do much driving. The bed was pretty uncomfortable, "too firm" would be understating it, felt like sleeping on spring-mounted plywood. There's only 3 machines in the coin laundry, and they are combo washer/driers which take upwards of an hour at a minimum, so be prepared to wait if you want to do washing. There's no change machine in the laundry so stop by reception if you need change first. While the machines do accept electronic payments, it has to be one of the dozens of app-based payment methods (line, paypay, etc), regular credit cards don't work. Aside from the castle, the area around the hotel is a bit of a dead zone (to be fair, most of Wakayama city is). If you want to find dinner after 8pm, or do any sort of shopping, you'll have to head towards the JR Wakayama station, which is a few Km down the road. Walkable, but better to get a cab (about Y1000).
