Cala de Mar Resort & Spa Ixtapa

I visited after an event and found it to be an amazing, relaxing, experience. This was a single traveler trip and I enjoyed being in my private pool and foodie experience.

First time at Cala de mar. Every room has a view to die for. To be honest, there isn't a location anywhere at the resort where there isn't an amazing view of the ocean. Every single staff member could not have been nicer. Most importantly the food was absolutely amazing. In addition to a handful of international dishes you'd expect to find at a hotel restaurants menu that have small Mexican twists, there are plenty of amazing locally sourced and inspired dishes that we enjoyed very much. We did a cooking class with Chef Oscar, highly recommend. The class begins with a trip to the markets in Zihuatanejo where you shop with Chef Oscar for ingredients for the lunch you guys will prepare. The experiences made us appreciate the menu at the Cala de Mar a lot more as we can see ingredients are locally sourced and dishes are inspired locally. Being able to watch Chef Oscar expertly prepare ceviche with fresh caught Mahi Mahi from that very morning... Absolutely amazing. Hope to visit Cala de Mar again soon!

This place is fabulous! You have your own little tiny pool in the private patio outside of your bedroom that looks out over the Pacific ocean. Comfortable bed and pillows. We were with a group all staying there. Beautiful hotel pool. Friendly efficient staff.

We had a phenomenal experience at Cala De Mar resort last week. The resort is about 15 minutes away from the main Hotel/beach strip in Ixtapa so it is secluded and quiet. Anthony took care of our room (super service), Anna took care of us at the front desk, and Victor plus all the other staff treated us like gold (we ordered room service a lot and the food was great - especially the breakfast!!). The resort helped us schedule activities throughout the week with a terrific company (Oscar & Freddy were amazing guides/drivers) including baby sea turtle release, horse riding on the beach, surf lessons, and jet ski's on the main beach. The spa massage was so good we had to do a second one, and the spa "sound bath" was a highlight (Sarah made it a fantastic experience for the whole family). I would rate it as top 3 family trip's we've taken.

The check-in was perfect, the room was perfect, however we had an incident and the management response was far from perfect. We were enjoying our beautiful room and pool on our first evening when a sudden plunge of water came splashing into our pool. It turns out housekeeping was in the room above moping there sundeck and then dumped the mop bucket onto the roof above and directly into our pool assuming our room was unoccupied. A minute later I had a knock on the door from housekeeping. They cleaned the pool immediately, which i appreciated. When the incident was reported to multiple managers all i got was we will investigate further. I did not have any further follow up except for the thank you for your stay email. This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel, but they had a 1 star follow up to this incident. I was just grateful we were not in the pool when this happened. At the very least, I would have appreciated an apology and maybe a free drink, dinner or discount. The hotel is beautiful but please be aware of this incident as it seems to be common practice when rooms below are unoccupied.

Cala De Mar is a truly luxurious resort with excellent food, friendly people and stunning views. The rooms and service were exceptional, my room was always clean and well stocked. We did a few of the activities the resort offers and none disappointed, we had a really great time every day. The spa is perfect for a day relaxing by the pool, I highly recommend at least one massage while you're there.

Everything about the resort was exceptional. The beauty of the location, the rooms, pools service and food were fabulous. Our favorite event was the private chef cooking experience. Oscar took us to the fish and produce markets to select food for our feast. We had a brief break, and then returned to one of the resort’s restaurants, the table was beautifully set with a bounty of flowers, the ingredients for our 5 course lunch and implements for preparation. Oscar was amazing with his presentation, explanations and skills. I would highly recommend this resort and the cooking experience with Oscar!

Where to begin with this amazing property in Ixtapa? Before we even arrived we were contacted by Edwin, our “personal assistant”, inquiring about any specific requests we had for our stay. We asked for a particular room location and that our room be feather free, also for an umbrella on our terrace. Every request was met with a resounding “yes”. On arrival, ever-helpful Fernando and his welcoming colleague checked us in, and Fernando showed us around the property before taking us to our room, where are luggage had already been delivered. From the start, our one week at this resort was a stay in paradise. The room was beautiful, and mornings on the terrace were sublime watching whales spout and slap their tails and lines of pelicans fly by at eye level from our completely private plunge pool. A delicious American breakfast (eggs or chilequiles with coffee and juice or fruit) came with our rate and delivery to the room if desired was included, as late as noon. Lots of great spots to hang out all over the property, including cabanas at the infinity pool; a rocky beach with a hammock, swings, and raised lounge platforms where you can have a picnic or just hang out; a peaceful Zen Zone overlooking the rocky beach; an outdoor yoga deck with more incredible views; a well-equipped fitness center; and of course our very own expansive terrace with the most tranquil view. So many special touches at the resort: pastries and hot beverages in the library each morning, plenty of bottled water, an espresso coffee machine and a fridge stocked with soda, a straw hat and bag for guests to keep, guacamole and chips and a couple mini Coronas delivered to the room in the late afternoon, cookies in the library at night. Pampering at every turn. The spa is beautiful and my 2 1/2 hour body scrub, mask and massage with skilled and warm-hearted Lety left my skin feeling like silk. The staff was warm and easygoing, in particular Francisco in housekeeping (he left our room immaculate and accommodated our late schedule), Felix at the Terrace Bar, and Fernando, who bent over backwards to take care of our every need, always with a genuine smile. We can’t say enough good things about him. In fact, every individual we encountered on the staff was genuinely warm and helpful. And yet with all these superlatives, our experience was made the most memorable by “nuestro nuevo mejor amigo” Ulises, the talented and funny bartender at the Terrace Bar. If you like cocktails, don’t miss - I repeat DO NOT MISS - his delicious concoctions, in particular the basil margarita (try it with mezcal) and the pepino margarita (a refreshing cucumber libation). This man is a delight, and we’d return to Cala de Mar based on the strength (literally and figuratively) of his cocktails alone. There are only a few downsides to the property. No sandy beach except by taxi or a 20 minute walk to Playa Quieta (the Club Med beach, also called Playa Incluyente). There was only one restaurant open for dinner for the first half of our stay and the food was disappointing, at least to our taste (we were pleasantly surprised at how good the Seafood Market was once it became available later in the week.) It’s a $10 cab ride each way into Ixtapa to eat elsewhere, and no restaurants outside the property within walking distance. Ixtapa itself is a tourist town, no big market to get supplies, not nearly as interesting and diverse as Zihuatanejo down the road. But once we surrendered to the bliss that is Cala de Mar, none of this seemed to matter.

My stay at Cala de Mar in Ixtapa was truly fantastic. The room was stunning, featuring a private jacuzzi with breathtaking views, creating the perfect spot to unwind. The hotel was impeccably clean, and the staff was warm and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. While the hotel is exceptional, a few improvements could elevate it further. First, gratuities are already included, but this isn’t clearly communicated, which can cause confusion. More transparency would enhance the experience. Second, while the food was decent, a more skilled chef would bring the dining to the same high standard as the rest of the hotel. Additionally, the Seafood Market restaurant’s reservation system needs improvement—despite requiring reservations, my table was given away to other guests. Another issue was room service, which often took up to an hour—a long wait for a luxury hotel. Improving efficiency here would be a great enhancement. Despite these minor issues, Cala de Mar remains an incredible destination. The breathtaking views, exceptional rooms, and welcoming atmosphere make it a wonderful place to relax. With a few refinements, it has the potential to be truly world-class. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a luxurious, peaceful, and scenic escape in Ixtapa!
