"I loved the hotel and the restaurant"

10.0

I have been reading some bad reviews about the hotel and restaurant and I honestly feel that they have been in another place. Biagio and Antonella - at the hotel - were absolutely amazing and accommodated my requests as much as possible. The restaurant was awesome and very cheap for what we ate. It might not be perfect, but it is lovely and way better than fancy and expensive places. I will be back for sure!

"Great hotel/restaurant combo."

10.0

Perfect layover for someone "doing" Calabria. An excellent base for hiking in Monte Pollino National Park. And above all, a friendly welcoming staff in the hotel portion, plus a 5 star restaurant attached. The accommodation is in rooms arranged round a central grassy space, ideal for a late afternoon spritz, comfortable beds, clean and fresh. Breakfast served in the hotel lobby area, with some of the best cake and a surprise..ricotta with jam and chocolate shavings..superb. The restaurant is a stand out. Fernando was excellent and Daniela, the wife of the owner and chef, was the perfect foil. Food was way above expectations, local own label wine OK, but try for some of the better local wines...Fernando can advise. Stayed here on our way to R.C. and on our way back to Bari. Can highly recommend.

"Perfect One Night Layover"

10.0

This hotel served as our half-way stop between Rome and Sicily on both our way to and our way from Italy. The property is beautiful and well cared for, the rooms are spacious and clean and the host is a joy. We had dinner at the on-site restaurant on our way to Sicily and it was superb. On our way back we stopped on a Sunday and the restaurant was closed so the owner got us reservations at a good local alternative and then hopped on his motor bike and led us there.

"Unexpected pleasure"

10.0

Nothing super fancy here, but comfortable bungalow style rooms. Reminded me a bit of Big Sur even though ocean is nowhere near. Really good restaurant where service was very attentive without being overbearing. But the best was breakfast in the morning. I don't remember having a meal prepared with that much care and finesse. And a symphony of flavors. My buddy who was traveling with me would agree.

"KEEPS GETTING BETTER !!!"

10.0

We have been staying at Locanda di Alia while visiting family in Castrovillari. This is our third time in 8 years. The hotel keeps getting better and better. New sheets, pillows and added amenities. The biggest improvement is the breakfast room. Biagio and Antonella will make you feel at home and have wonderful selections for you. Not only Does the breakfast have wonderful selections , Antonella's plates are works of art. It's a great place to stay.

"Lovely hotel with lovely rooms"

10.0

All the rooms are on the ground floor set in a circle with their own outside seating area. The rooms are modern, well lit, spacious and clean. The owner was very kind and took us to a local restaurant as he was closed the night we stayed.

"Don't come to this hotel in the winter!"

2.0

We booked this hotel from Canada for two couples travelling for 5 weeks in Italy and Sicily. When we arrived it appeared to be abandoned - though the restaurant was open no one could help us. We found the "hotel" which the Blue Guide said was charming - but it was as if closed - dirty, dark and cold. Finally an old man came with keys to show us dreary rooms amidst unkept gardens and we all looked at each other and said we had made a mistake and would not stay. I went into the restaurant to say we would not be there for dinner - which they did not seem to understand. As we were pulling out of the parking lot a man who did speak some English came and said we had a reservation and that we had to pay - we'd booked through Booking.com who I have also complained to. I tried to reason with him, that he could not expect us to stay in such a place and he became very angry - my husband said later I should have asked " would your mother sleep here??" I am sure the answer would have been a resounding NO! Perhaps it is nice in the high season when the pool is open and the staff are there to make people feel welcome but don't even think about going in February - in the off season it is a very neglected place. We are seasoned travellers and reasonable people - usually pretty flexible but the four all felt we had to move on!

"a bit on the dark side"

6.0

Our room was spacious enough with a bedroom separate from a room containing a desk, table and 2 chairs which has a door to the patio. The bathroom has a large bathtub with jacuzzi function. We found out too late that we have to press a switch near the bathroom door to get the jacuzzi to work. There were cracked tiles in the bathroom and in some tiles there were holes from fixings probably removed at some point. The toilet seat kept slipping to the side and the shower head mounting bracket was loose. Everything felt a bit dark and the furnishings were not exactly our taste. In the pool there was green mould around the bottom edges and it did not look very inviting. Breakfast consisted of cornflakes, an assortment of cookies and cakes, bread that was on the dry side and three large chunks of cheese which had white and/or greenish mould on the outside. We have no idea if this is normal for Italian cheese but it did not make us sick. There was also honey and citrus maramalade. The restaurant of 'La Locanda di Alia' is very expensive, and closed on Sundays. The food was nice but we are not gourmets and considered the cost-performance ratio as not good. A main course of veal in white wine sauce for EUR 20,- was served without any side dishes like potatoes, and we could not find any side dishes on the menue that we could have ordered with the veal. We mainly stayed here as we wanted to go walking in the Pollino National Park. This was difficult though as the National Park office in Rotonda was not able to provide a detailed map of where signposted walks start. They explained to us though were we could walk to a nice lookout point.
