Great meal with a couple of beers in front of the log fire before retreating to a comfortable room. Couldn't ask for more

"Not the Bear… and barely worth it!"

6.0

It wasn’t the warmest welcome… “Food stopped five minutes ago, I think”. Apparently 8.45pm is the magic hour at the Crown & Garter, but the lad behind the bar didn’t seem sure and wasn’t really that bothered about checking. Since it was only 8.50, I asked if he could check whether the chef could be persuaded to cook one steak as I’d been on the road for about four hours. The only checking was done with another colleague behind the bar, who confirmed that 8.45 was the last order for food. At that point, I gave up as no-one in their right mind wants to have a pissed-off chef cooking their meal. As I left, I thought of the hotel owners, barmen, receptionists and night porters all over the world who have happily offered to make me and other late arrivals a sandwich. But then I thought, is 8.45 really that late anyway? So instead I drove fifty tortuous miles down the hill to Hungerford, (ok, it was actually six, but felt a LOT further) where the story at The Bear Hotel was the same – or was it? “I think they’ve stopped serving, ten minutes ago, but I’ll check with the chef,” said the helpful barman – with a smile (it was now 9.10pm). He returned a couple of minutes later and gave me the good news that the chef was happy to cook me a meal. It was a delicious rib-eye, and what’s more, the chef came out personally a little later to check I’d enjoyed it, (take note, C&G). Otherwise, the Crown & Garter is a decent-looking pub with extr

"Lovely for a peaceful weekend"

10.0

We had a lovely weekend at the Crown and Garter, the location is quiet and peaceful with plenty of walks around the fields and hills nearby (maps in the room). There is a nice bakery on site, selling breads and cakes, and the hotel restaurant is fantastic. The room was comfortable, clean and modern, and at night there was no noise at all. Highly recommended for a quiet relaxing getaway.

Nice rooms, clean and well prepared. I enjoyed the excellent restaurant and over my stay of two nights the consistency of service was there at breakfast too.

"Great weekend visit with excellent food"

10.0

Delightful gastropub with high quality B&B accommodation. Stayed only one night, but the evening meal s excellent, with a good wine list on offer. Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Appears to be a good place for country walks, but unfortunately the British weather meant it wasn't an option this time. According to the info you can also do baking and cooking classes here. The bread is certainly made in sure and was excellent. It may not be the cheapest for a pub B&B but is very good quality and is at least as good as most London hotels at this price.
