"Exceptional"

10.0

It was a very quiet and cozy place where you can drive to Volcano National Park only in a few mins. We stayed at VFI for 2 days so that we could fully enjoy the national park, and we totally did enjoy the whole experience!! We were a little bit worried about where to grab our lunch and dinner. VFI kindly provided us great information about restaurants and grocery stores around Volcano, which made our stay so much easier!

"Jon is AWESOME!!"

10.0

Jon was very communicative and helpful!! The room was HUGE and just what we needed. We had the Ginger Room which had a nice lanai with sliding doors from the room. So glad we brought our groceries. We used the kitchen and coffee was available in the morning. Coin Laundry down the street. 10/10 I would definitely stay here again!!

"Room was clean but greatly lacking in hospitality."

5.0

Location and the nice big room.

No staff, you had to make your coffee and wash your dishes. The kitchen needed a deep cleaning. Breakfast was a nut bar and a roll in a cellophane wrapper.

"We had a very unpleasant experience."

4.0

location, spacious room

The TV is quite small, the bed set feels extremely old and isn't warm enough, the breakfast is limited, the lighting is inadequate, the driveway is too long, and it gets very cold at night. Additionally, although the original price was for four adults, we were charged an extra $60 for bringing two young kids; if we hadn't paid the additional fee, we wouldn't have been allowed to stay. I want to clarify that my review is an honest representation of my experience at the hotel. I believe in providing genuine feedback to assist both the management and future guests. My intention is not to retaliate but to offer constructive insights based on my observations during my stay. Initially, we mistakenly went to the Volcano Inn, located 1.2 miles away. Its name is very similar to Volcano Forest Inn. The Volcano Inn offers hot tubs, a delightful public dining area, and more competitive pricing. Additionally, there's a food truck selling Thai cuisine at the entrance. Importantly, it's kid-friendly with no additional charges. I would recommend the Volcano Inn if you're looking for amenities like a hot tub, a pleasant breakfast, or if you're traveling with kids.

"Great location / OK stay"

6.0

Proximity to Volcanoes National Park, fresh fruit in the kitchen, ability to cook your own food in a full kitchen if you wanted to, large room.

The stay was fine / it felt pretty impersonal for an inn and especially for the price-point but was close to the park which was nice. Another guest I ran into summed it up perfectly that it felt more like a self-service hostel than an inn - it’s self check-in and out, there didn’t appear to be any staff on-site (wasn’t needed for my stay, but still felt a bit odd to only see a couple guests milling around and no inn keeper or staff). The room itself had a really overpowering smell to it - really strong detergent or room spray or something. The included breakfast was an underwhelming basket with 2 packs of fruit-cream oatmeal, 2 Chewy brand granola bars, and 2 mystery prepackaged cake things - only the bars had expiration dates on them (past dated 21?). The fruit in the kitchen was a real plus, there were bananas, papaya, and oranges - great touch (maybe putting the bars and oatmeal in the kitchen with the fruit, instead of in the bedroom would make it feel more like a choice as a continental breakfast? Then people could pick their own flavors). The stay was fine in the end, just pretty expensive for the vibe of a hostel and a $60/night cleaning fee, but there’s information that there’s no room servicing until checkout, so just another way to crank up the base price through extra fees. Also watch out for the other potential fees - there’s even a $100 fee if you leave with the lanai unlocked (I made sure to lock mine, but seems a bit excessive) - especially given they leave the windows open/unlocked for check-in. Overall an ok place to stay.

I liked the location in the rain forest 🌳 I would have liked to have had a stopper For the bathtub 🛀 I also think that you should add the two light bulbs to the bathroom light fixture! Empty sockets can be dangerous!

"Perfect stay for discovering the Volcano Park."

9.0

Perfect starting point for the Volcano Park, only 5 minutes from the entrance but literally in the forest so very quiet. Restaurants and shops within 5 minutes by car. The Lodge has a very well equipped kitchen available if you want to prepare your food by yourself. Jon the host ensures that the whole Inn is always very clean and tidy and he is also very helpful when you need anything.
