Grand Royal Hotel

Never before!!!, So uncomfortable with the cleaniness of the bathtub, all towels, show curtain and linens. I had to clean the bathtub as it was greasy. The towels looked dirty, hygienely unreliable and not dry. Glad its only one night stay. Horrible experience.

Very nice and clean hotel with great service. Location is just between city center and Canton fair. Totally recommend for business trip.

The rooms were clean. Bedding was okay, towels were great. Housekeeping was excellent. Laundry service was first rate. Fruit left in room daily was always of excellent quality. The buses to the Canton Festival left on time and were clean. There's no business centre and the front desk staff (all shifts) speak terrible English. Sending a fax or courier out is a real nuisance. The Internet is terrible. Are you listening, Grand Royal? Change your routers. This isn't 1997. Nobody comes to Guangzhou for vacation, and if you can't work in the evening then the hotel stay is not a good one. Fitness Centre is terrible I would say a scam. I'll put no Fitness Centre on the questionnaire below. The breakfast buffet is full of food, most of it bad. I thought the traditional Chinese noodle soup with pork was the best thing at breakfast. (They do get points for two decent Saeco cappuccino machines) The restaurants in the hotel on M and 1 are both not good, and very badly attended. I ordered thai chicken curry (a House Specialty according to their advertising) one night alone at the restaurant, and was given a pan fried chicken breast with some curry sauce on the side. I realized that curry needs to be cooked slowly over many hours in a large pot, but if nobody comes in your restaurant, you don't go to the trouble of making it ahead of time. We ordered a Club Sandwich which was so bad we sent it back. I believe when a hotel puts a western dish on their menu their is a responsibility to know what the dish is. There is no fried chicken in a club sandwich or egg. Look online, find club sandwich recipes and do exactly what they say. If the food was better and the Internet faster I would give 3.5 stars.

Big room with another small one as a place for work. Good breakfasts. A bit too noisy as far as street traffic is concerned. Maybe some furnitures and carpets need renovation or exchange for new ones. Shuttle bus service to the airport offered for only 24 CNY.

It's a old hotel (since Jan-2006) despite that it's right next to the Chinese Police Station (Safe). The carpet in the rooms is old and you can feel the smokey although we are requested a non-smoking room.

While at the Canton Fair, we stayed in this hotel. The hotel was in a central location, close to the subway and bus station. The hotel had limited English speaking staff, however, we were lucky enough to be checked in by a staff member whose English was quite good. The check in process was quick and easy. We stayed on the 08th floor, a non smoking floor. Throughout our stay the smell of cigarettes/smoking was quite strong on our floor. The room itself was clean and comfortable, with a good range of TV stations which included a couple of English speaking shows. The bathroom was a little run down, however, it was clean and supplies were good. The beds were incredibly hard and a good night sleep was difficult because of this. We had a room that faced the road and while the noise from the traffic was constant, it wasn't a bother for me but could be for light sleepers. We were welcomed with a little tray of fruit and this was supplied daily as was complimentary bottled water. There is a nightclub on the 2nd floor that had a really strong unpleasant smell and this sometimes was evident in the elevator. The hotel can arrange a taxi pick up which was helpful as haling a cab can be challenging directly in front of the property. The staff member that checked us out answered his phone multiple times throughout the process and even served another guest who pushed in front midway through us checking out. This behaviour however, unfortunately is quite commonplace in China. Overall I would recommend this property for it's excellent location, price and cleanliness.
