Panorama Palace Hotel

This hotel has one of the most attractive locations in Sorrento, as the name suggests wonderful panoramic sea view and access via a public lift to a sandy beach and restaurants down below. Situated in Mate there are frequent buses to Sorrento itself but the location is otherwise quite remote. We stayed in a sea view room which was large but rather old fashioned. The same applied to the restaurant, breakfast and dinner were included. You sit at the same table every night and order your dinner from a limited menu the preceding night. Service is friendly and with a sense of humour. Public areas are attractive and well maintained. Work is ongoing outside the hotel to create a piazza looking out across the bay, a pleasant place to sit after the evening meal.

We are very dissatisfied with our stay at this hotel. Every day, the air conditioning was switched off during the daytime. It seemed to be done purely to save money, which is unacceptable. We paid for our stay and expected to have access to basic amenities, including air conditioning, at all times. We also experienced problems with hot water. On one occasion, we returned to the hotel earlier than usual and there was no hot water available for a shower. I had to go to reception and ask them to turn it on. The most disturbing incident happened when we were in our room during the day. The air conditioning had been running normally, and suddenly we heard a knock on the door. Before we had a chance to respond, a member of staff entered the room without permission. She did not wait for us to say "come in." It seemed as though she assumed we were out and came to switch off the air conditioning. As an excuse, she brought a small bottle of water and claimed she had come to deliver it. One small bottle for two people, which nobody had requested, was clearly just a pretext for entering the room. This was a serious invasion of our privacy and completely unprofessional behavior. Overall, this was a terrible experience. The constant attempts to save money at guests' expense, the lack of hot water, and the staff entering our room without permission made our stay very unpleasant. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and would strongly advise others to stay elsewhere.

This is definitely not a 4 star hotel. Rooms are very very basic and no better than hostels I have stayed in. The pool and terrace had no shade, or anything to make it look nice and were not really useable. The food was awful and most certainly not cooked fresh. Set menu and set seating plan felt like school dinners. The location is not Sorrento as we were told and I have only just noticed it says shuttle bus, I have no idea what that was but it was not offered to us. We had to take train or bus into Sorrento as there was very little nearby and the station was a good mile away up hill! Only positives were staff were mostly pleasant (except restaurant) and the bedding on our tiny single beds was very clean and fresh. The cleanliness throughout was the only redeeming feature.
