Hotel Altora

Conveniently located near the Harz narrow gauge railway, (with a railway theme to the hotel) but only a few minutes walk towards the centre of the historic town centre. Clean and modern rooms , a good breakfast buffet and friendly helpful staff.

Very handy for the railway station (around 5 mins on foot) for both mainline and HSB Harz Mountain Railway. The rooms were typically Germanic, efficient heating and nice and clean. Some rooms have a view over the steam locomotive shed for an extra cost. Breakfast was plentiful and set us up for the day.

Stayed at hotel before but not in new block. Superb room with view over railway lines. Breakfast as before well presented and plenty of choice.

Stopped four nights. Overall pretty good, if slightly more expensive than it might be. The hotel was a few minutes walk from the railway stations, and provided free parking. I guess that the inflated price is as it is a themed location for the narrow gauge railway, with the drinks delivered by train feature in the restaurant. Room was good sized, and very clean. The double bed I booked was actually two single beds pushed together, with a single duvet. The rooms could do with tea/coffee facilities. The bar / restaurant was good, as was breakfast which was available from 07.00.

This hotel is perfect for all types especially the rail fan. Over looks the HSB shed/yard and has a model train delivering the beer to the table. Very clean and comfortable with helpful staff. A small city tax provides a discount booklet including area buses. One to remember.

great place to stay. close to the railway station and only 10 minutes walk into the old town. staff were all very friendly and helpful. excellent buffet breakfast.

There are many hotels in Wernigerode. Some of those are probably better than the Hotel Altora. Some of those may have a better hotel restaurant, though we were quite happy with the dinner and breakfasts we enjoyed there. Some of those may not have fire truck sirens blaring past the hotel late at night. Some of those are air-conditioned. Almost all of them are located closer to the city center. For us, none of that mattered. Sitting in our rooms, with the comfy leather chairs pulled up to the wide-open windows, watching the massive 2-10-2 steam locomotives get serviced with coal, water, and ash removal, while the departing and arriving steam trains chuff past on their way into the Harz nature park, made all of that irrelevant. Yes, there are probably better hotel options. But for us three railfans, there will never, NEVER be another hotel in Wernigerode with amenities to offset that amazing view.

Excellent hotel with very friendly staff. We are not "ferro sexuals" (train spotters) but we never the less enjoyed to old steam engines and the general theme of the hotel. We had a wonderful studio with enough space for the five of us. The hotel is wonderful but I would not return to the restaurant. The food is OK but there are better choices nearby in the town centre. The parking is not sufficient but we managed to squeeze the car in.

Close to station. Room had view of the steam trains. Model train delivering drinks in the restaurant was amusing.

Our room had a great view of railway yard, which is fantastic for railway enthusiasts. Meals were very good & dining room nicely appointed with a train delivering drinks!
