Tolarno Hotel

This is a Melbourne Icon and it's somewhat sad to see that Fitzroy Street has really taken a dip. Most of the shops and restaurants are closed, it's quite a sad one as this strip used to thrive. I had no idea that the restaurant and bar downstairs werent open either. Just sad. Anyway, the location is great. I had a room at the back of the building which was really nice and quiet.

Just a few bits of feedback from my recent stay. I'll preface this by saying I booked due to convenience for work nearby and my expectations were fairly low given the price point, so please take this in that spirit! A few things worth knowing: There was no desk in the room. There was a kitchen bench but it was too high to comfortably use as a workspace. I ended up moving the fridge and placing my laptop on top of it, which worked but wasn't ideal! The fridge was quite noisy — it seemed to kick on every hour — so I ended up switching it off. Looks like an older model. The windows rattled quite a bit. I ended up wedging some tea bags in the gaps which did the trick, but might be worth looking into. The TV only picked up ABC, SBS and Channel 9 — no Channel 7 or 10. Might be a quick fix. On the plus side, I felt safe and it was nice and quiet, so thank you for that!

The reception gentleman Steven was very polite and super helpful in many ways. The chef in the restaurant was a really interesting and skilled chef. And great to chat with in the culinary field. He is very experienced and a decent man! I enjoyed the hotel immensely, the art work and medieval furnishings, lead light window, rich diversity of deep colours was such a wonderful contrast to the more sanitised hotels. A great place. "I will be back!"

Great location and we loved the “vibe” of the art hotel.

Internet was tragic. Staff, when around, were good - but a definite “get your own towels from the cupboard in the hall” vibe. Attached restaurant and bar didn’t seem open (for breakfast coffee, for instance) at regular times, and were unpatronised while open.

The apartment was roomy with loads of character. The shower pressure was brilliant and there were plenty of towels. The location was wonderful and the staff were very friendly.

There were some dirty items such as oven tray and bedroom remote didn't work. The place is tired and could do with a refresh, but all in all i enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay again.
