"Awkward experience"

7.0

The location was good.

I was not impressed with the selection of onsen baths, their timing limitations, and variety. Food was okay, but not outstanding. I did not like that meals took place in a shared big room. It felt awkward. Staff did their best trying to show hospitality in a traditional Japanese style, but it came off as very cold and impersonal. Felt standardized. That said, I probably misunderstood the experience - not fault of the staff at all. But I can't help reflecting back thinking of my other Ryokan stays, and comparing them to the experience I had here. Honestly, perhaps I had too high of expectations - given the price.

"Authentisch und traditionell"

8.0

Bellissima location e ambiente molto tradizionale. Cena e colazione tradizionali kaiseki: tutto servito in camera.

"Great Japanese cultural experience"

10.0

Magnificent wooden house with classic Japanese architecture. Very peaceful location and the hot baths were very hot and very nice. The dinner was fantastic. The breakfast was very surprising. Great walks nearby with views on Mount Fuji.

Wished we could have stayed longer

"We strongly recommend Arai Onsen for a wonderful relax time and exceptional meals."

9.0

It is located in the center of Shuzenji by the river. The architecture of the ryokan incorporates water into the Japanese garden that has an ancient tree and the koi pond. The foods were excellent and the cook accommodated our foods restrictions. The quality of the onsen bath water was exceptionally good for your skin. There were four large baths (swap separate women/men by hours) and two family baths (one was for fees). In the family bath, you can see koi swimming from the soaking tub. The staff were very friendly and professional.

Our room was quite far from the main dining room and the large baths. Our room was smaller because part of it was devoted to the stairs, we were on the second floor. It could been nice if they had a hospitality room where you can relax with coffee and tea. Other ryokans that we stayed in the past had this room.
