"Comfortable and Convenient"

8.0

This hotel only has 18 rooms and is simply decorated and furnished but stylish. Rooms are a good size and beds comfortable. It is close to many good restaurants and the casino. It is conveniently located to walk to central Funchal and its attractions. it is also close to the sea and promenade. No steep hills to climb. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool is a good size with comfortable loungers. Breakfast had a good variety of fruit, breads and cereal, cold meat and cheese or hot options. Great value for the excellent price paid.

"Good location"

8.0

Very pleasant stay there in Sep 2015. Friendly and helpful reception staff. Crisply clean rooms, towels changed daily, comfortable firm beds, no tea/coffee making facilities (take your own kettle). Breakfast is toast, bread rolls, cake, slices of ham and cheese with tomatoes and cucumber, slices of fruit as you’d expect, coffee/tea and yoghurt. Eggs and bacon upon request. Overall very nice but Beware, if you eat on the terrace you’ll likely have to endure the smokers fumes as well, as indeed you will eating outdoor anywhere else. Excellent B&B location, situated on the edge of Funchal and before the main hotel district. Turning left outside the hotel, a short up hill walk past a minimarket takes you to a broad, smart avenue with bus stops, where there are a few snack bars, restaurants, tour/trip kiosk, car hire, etc. Turn right past the casino complex for a downhill stroll to Funchal centre of 10/15 mins, passing by a very pleasant St Catherines park on the way. Turning left outside the hotel goes downhill passing Ronaldos museum to a view point on the cliff overlooking the harbour. Strolling further on down a steep incline to the beginning of the seafront promenade, for a pleasant stroll along the front as far as the fort and into the centre. Suggest taking the hop on / hop off bus tour for orientation, the cable car for Monte and botanical gardens, the fort, and old quarter. Many restaurant with a good standard of food at the kind of prices you’d expect at home say £10 approx per course. My especial favourite is the House Jazz.

"Second Home"

10.0

Once again we have had a super holiday at Bright Star, since our last visit the hotel has had a bit of a makeover, thankfully the staff haven't, they're still the same great bunch we met previously. I cannot understand why some guests reported the hotel was noisy, it's one of the quietest places we've stayed in! Rooms are spotless, the small garden and seating area is a delight and the pool extremely inviting. Can't wait to get back and meet up with "our girls", many thanks Larysia, Zeta and Katya, see you in December.

"Fantastic staff & great location"

8.0

We stayed a week in this hotel over the time of the flower festival and the location was brilliant as it was fairly near the town centre and yet in a quiet location. Surprised to see a review saying the area was noisy as it seemed very quiet and the rooms all overlook the pool area not the road outside. As has been mentioned by other reviewers some of the beds tend to be very creaky and this was an issue for me but immediately remedied by the hotel changing our room. To be fair the hotel gave us exactly what we had requested i.e. a double bed, but as the creakiness seemed to be caused by the base of the bed it was much worse on the double and once we moved to a couple of singles it was resolved. The rooms were immaculately clean and the staff in the hotel really made our trip as they were so friendly and helpful and always smiling. Katya on reception arranged for a bottle of wine and some Madeira honey cake to be waiting in our room for us on the evening prior to us leaving, which was a lovely gesture and much appreciated. We only ate breakfast in the hotel which was a plentiful buffet and hot food if required cooked to order. I must also mention the Ukrainian girl who mainly served us in the breakfast room as she was so welcoming every day. Overall a really good experience and we will return again.
