The rooms were a lovely size with a bath and separate shower. Stellenbosch restaurants were all in walking distance as well as museums etc

I rarely write negative reviews, but in this case I feel it is important. I accidentally double-booked one night under a non-refundable rate and fully accept that this was my mistake. The room was paid in full and simply remained unused. What is unacceptable, however, is how Batavia Boutique Hotel handled the situation. I submitted a cancellation request through Booking.com — no response. I visited the hotel personally the next day — the manager told me he would discuss it with the owner and revert. No one ever followed up. Not a reply. Not even a ā€œno.ā€ I was not asking for a full refund. A 20–30% goodwill adjustment would have been a reasonable and professional gesture. Instead, they chose silence. Keeping a guest’s money is one thing. Ignoring them entirely is another. For a property positioning itself as a boutique luxury experience in Stellenbosch, I expected better communication and a basic level of courtesy. True hospitality shows when things don’t go perfectly — not when everything runs smoothly. Technically within their rights? Yes. In line with 5-star service standards? Absolutely not. Future guests should be aware: once payment is taken, do not expect flexibility or proactive communication.
