The French Country Inn

The property is charming. It's been several years since we stayed here last. Was sorry to hear room behind the staircase in the lobby is no longer used to relax in with tea & cookies. Breakfast menu extensive and the staff are friendly and helpful. THE BIG SURPRISE was 25% service charge added to the bill. If I hadn't noticed I would have left a 50% gratuity! WoW! Arianna was a Great server and no doubt would have been deserving of it, but, that was REALLY SNEAKY!!! We had not seen that anywhere before! And we live in downtown Chicago! Aside from that we like the balcony and the lakeview...the renovated rooms. See below what we didn't like about them.

1st>The SOFT Water! 2nd>We were not made aware that you must key lock when leaving! Other hotels you just close the door. 3rd>Hangers are non-removable and our open closet was so high up. Made it difficult to hang anything. 4th>We were in room 106. All outside doors had room numbers at eye level. Ours was nowhere to be found! Wait a minute! There it is up near the ceiling! Caused confusion trying to find the room. 5th>Room lighting at night it TERRIBLE! Ceiling and wall lights are SO BRIGHT!! No way to turn off except to get up and hit the switch, Desperately needs some soft light lamps. 6th>going back to breakfast...could have sworn property said breakfast was included...To us it was a Bait & Switch to get $10 coupons TOWARDS BREAKFAST...I see..it would have bought a continental one with those.

The view was really the only redeeming quality of this stay.

I was denied the free breakfast I booked my reservation with. There were broken tiles in the bathroom. My overhead room light flickered constantly so I could never turn it on. There were scratches on the walls. Overall, my room was not what the pictures show- very outdated and not worth what I paid.

Right on the lake, beautiful, charming architecture! Restaurant on site. Fireplace, comfortable bed, amazing skylights, even one above the shower!

Beautiful lake view and excess! Parking accessible....close to rooms.

Lake view was perfect. The sitting area outside of our room was great except people were smoking even though it wasn’t allowed. I tried to call the office but no one answered. Staff is friendly. The rooms were clean but are on the older side. The bed was comfortable.
