The Bell Inn Charlbury

Asked to pay on arrival. Given a nice room, far too hot, could not control heat, window fell wide open, could not adjust, with scaffolding right outside. Given new room, inferior, no refund. No main light (needed torch to read). No bath. Bed partly collapsed (slats missing). Noisy til late (bar below, no door at bottom of stairs). ** No hot water for shower in morning. ** All for £105. Awful value.

Great stay lovely comfy bed, amazing breakfast and great location

This excellent three course set menu offers great value at £26. Imaginative choices include king prawns, smoked trout with celeriac remoulade and duck rillette starters followed by guinea fowl, sea bass or rib of beef, lemon tart and a generous plate of local cheeses. Please keep this formula, which offers something exciting and different!

Room position was really quiet. Breakfast items - bacon/sausage was tough and chewy to eat. Tasted like items had been cooked previously and heated up. The next day i went for eggs/beans on toast - it smelt odd so didnt eat it. No general information in the room. Sparce tea/coffee items available.

Treated ourselves to thier top of the range room . Amazing room which was huge and lovely, as was the barhroom. Woild def stay again

We booked this last minute as we had a Saturday free. I must say we could not complain about anything. £80 for a room and breakfast is really good and everything was great. Very pleasant staff and the lady that checked us in was really helpful and friendly. Room was clean evening meal was nice and so was the breakfast. No complaints whatsoever not sure as well what an other reviewer complained about the atmosphere in the bar. I agree it was a Saturday night but it was very lively. Yes it is a pub and has rooms just like most of them in the area. I can see nothing wrong with that. It’s a way of experiencing the local area and people. Well done the Bell Inn

Can’t comment on food, rooms or location I’m afraid as we cancelled our booking. Had originally booked for 17 of us back in May for September but realised 3 weeks before we hadn’t booked a table for dinner. Contacted pub by email and then after getting no reply rang them to be told that our booking was on the day of the Charlbury street fair & we wouldn’t be able to use the car park and they doubted whether they could feed us. So they said they’d let us know, despite another call by us chasing a response 2 days later no one called or emailed so we booked an alternative. Appreciate we left it late to book dinner and for a large party but just the courtesy of a call to say sorry can’t do it would be nice. Poor service

The further you drive north west from Oxford, the more you delve into the Cotswolds. The more you do, the greater the charm. But charm comes not just from the little towns and villages with honey coloured stone that lie down hill by the little rivers. Much of the charm comes from the people who own or work at the local pubs. So it is with the Bell Inn in Charlbury. Well done you!

Though we were staying only one night the staff were very helpful in changing around one of the two rooms we had booked to make it safe for a young child. The rooms were spacious and comfortable as were the bathrooms, well supplied with toiletries. There was room for all 4 of us to sit and have tea together, using the excellent facilities provided. We had a most enjoyable evening meal and a good breakfast to send us happily on our way to Fairytale farm just a short distance away.
