What an incredible hotel. It was spotless, with staff always around throughout the day cleaning and keeping it tidy, even pressure washing the paths and cleaning glass surfaces. The staff were so helpful and couldn’t do enough for you and made us feel very welcome. Our room (an Ortigia room) was a good size, with air con, and the bed was made daily and the towels were changed daily too. However, only two bottles of water were complimentary, and all other food and drink available in the room had to be paid for (and was very expensive!). The view of Ortigia from our room across the sea was stunning. The private beach is secluded and clean, and the staff there were helpful with getting you a sun lounger and providing you with towels. The pool area again is very clean and there were plenty of sun loungers available (although it may be different at other times of the year). There are 3 separate jacuzzi areas which overlook the sea, and we were lucky enough to have one to ourselves a couple of times. Our stay at the hotel was bed and breakfast, and the breakfast was absolutely amazing. We would definitely recommend it, not only for the quality and variety, but because there’s nowhere local to eat breakfast. So much choice and everything freshly made. We made sure that we filled up for the day. There are two small bars in the hotel; one in reception and one at the pool. However, these aren’t bars that you would go to to sit and have a drink in. These bars are purely where they make drinks to bring to you, so that was a bit disappointing.
Location wise, this would be an ideal hotel if you weren’t intending on venturing far. The hotel is quite remote and the boat taxis to Ortigia weren’t running - the cost of which would have been €25 each way per person, but the cost of the return journey is covered by the hotel, so for a couple it would cost €50 for a return trip. To get a car taxi to Ortigia cost €30 each way, plus we gave a tip of €5. So a return trip will cost you €70 each time. We therefore only ventured out to Ortigia 3 times and stayed at the hotel the rest of the time. However, the food and drink in the hotel is VERY expensive. For example, we ordered a beer and an Aperol spritz which, including the €4 delivery/table cover charge, cost €31. We had dinner at the hotel one evening which cost €130. There are a couple of restaurants within 5-10 mins’ walking distance, so we ate there a few times or ate in Ortigia on the days we went there. We thought we would book a few trips, but again because of the location of the hotel, we decided against it because it would cost a fortune in taxi fares to get us to the meeting point. We did do a walking and food tasting tour in Ortigia which was excellent.
We booked with Jet2 and have noticed that their holidays to this hotel now include car hire, so that would be useful if you’re confident enough to drive in Sicily. We wouldn’t have been!
The hotel had a WhatsApp number which is used to order food, drinks, taxis, and anything else we needed. They always replied immediately. The WhatsApp is particularly helpful when ordering the taxi from Ortigia, as you know that you’re getting a genuine taxi and you’re given the number plate. For Ortigia, the taxi always drops you at and picks you up from the Temple D’Apollo. The taxis were always nice cars.
We booked a transfer from Catania airport, and the hotel is approximately an hour away.
In summary, this is a stunning hotel, one of the best we’ve ever stayed in, but the location is remote and it will cost you a lot to spend your days in the hotel or to travel to another location. As stated above, this would be resolved if you hired a car and are confident to drive in Sicily, but we wouldn’t be. Pros: stunning hotel, friendly and helpful staff, private beach, nice pool of a decent size, clean rooms, gorgeous views, incredible breakfast, good staff communication via WhatsApp. Cons: remote location, very expensive food and drink, high cost of travel from the hotel, lack of bar areas.
