"Hayes Thorpe Hotel - England"

8.0

Loely leafy suberb location. Near a nice gold course with expensive hotel so very conveniet if you dont fancy paying £140 a night at the gold hotel for a room after a wedding. It was £55 for a double room without breakfast. Very clean and comfy.

"Bit of a dive"

4.0

I suppose £79 for a family room in Croydon (without breakfast though) isn't too bad but the place is falling apart. The wallpaper is all but falling off the walls and there are holes in the walls in a few spots! The shower was lukewarm at best (luckily it was a very hot day) and no hot water at all on the night. Strip light above the wash basin did not work and teh whole place was just grubby. On the plus side the sheets were clean and beds reasonably comfortable, although they were 3 singles as opposed to a double and a single - not good for a bit of hanky panky! Would I stay here again? In an emergency maybe and no doubt there are worse places in Croydon but probably a lot better. Paid less for Travelodge but this was a late booking andthe cheapest I could get. Rating 3/10

"Pretty awful"

2.0

Look out for the very unreasonable booking cancellation policy. I have never booked anywhere that expected 7 days notice to cancel before. The reception was scruffy but the staff were friendly enough I suppose. I stayed here on the second hottest day of the year, yet when I arrived the windows were closed and the radiators were on full. The room was scruffy and very dated. The bathroom must be 25 years old. The really shocking thing about the hotel is the price. They are charging high quality international chain prices for low end boarding house experience.

"old hotel, friendly stuff, good price"

6.0

The check-in was very easy handled. The man was very friendly and helpfully. He helped us to get the right tickets for the underground. The rooms does not look liked these on the website of the hotel. They werer used and relativly clean. The surfaces you can reach are fettled but the surface of the armoire wasn´t. The bathroom was very small but not that dirty some other discribed. Only the floor was an old wodden floor wich was creaking loudly. Because of the non-included breakfast we have lunch in the single restaurants near to the hotel. They were cheap and made very great english breakfast. Very nice were the boxes with tea and a water boiler in the room. It´s also a big adventage that they hafe included wifi. The centre of London is far away. You have to go by bus to West or East Croydon and change in the National Rail. All in all it took 45 minutes to arrive Victoria Station. It´s not that problematic because the trains leave the single stations very often but we stayed only for 4 days in London so it was annoying to spend so much time by arriving the city. I don´t know if i would book this hotel a second time but i won´t talk so out of booking it.

"Mould infested flea pit"

Avoid this Hotel. Im a business traveller and stay in a different hotel every night. I booked this hotel at the last minute and late in the day. First immpressions looked promising when i checked in, i was given a key and they took payment on arrival. I was in Room 8 which is a twin room on the second floor. i had been in the room about an hour working on my laptop and when i finished i decided to take a shower and venture out for somthing to eat. I opened the bathrrom door and was shocked to see black mould over the walls. i then opened the shower door and found that the cubicle looked like it hadnt been cleaned for months.

"Avoid if possible."

4.0

This hotel pulled a nasty trick or two. First, my booking for a ground or first floor double room, with disabled parking, was accepted in February for July. On arrival told only room was on second floor but "just by chance" they had a family room on the ground floor at only £10 a night surcharge. With time a problem I accepted - it was a large and comfortable room and not too pricey for the area. No disabled parking, I asked for a space to be reserved and there were mutterings about a fee of £5.00 a night but when it was obvious I knew the ropes they agreed to do it free as specified in my booking. Then told credit card machine out-of-order, cash only. I said I had not got cash but would pay on leaving. On leaving asked for bill, none forthcoming. I insisted on invoice showing VAT and the surcharge over the agreed price before handing over cash (this is the law in England, by the way). It took a 20 minute wait and in fact I left the hotel to collect other passengers and returned and hour later before I got the bill which, surprise surprise! was for originally agreed amount! We saw other foreign visitors handing over cash and not getting a receipt because they didn't know to ask for one. On checking later find that this is not the only time their credit card machine won't work. Coincidence or what? and why no standard VAT receipt? Good points: Room was a decent size, plenty of storage space, table and comfortable chairs. Decent size bathroom with full-size bath. Carpet had ingrained dirt but otherwise spotlessly clean and cleaned each day. And real milk, not that dammed 'long-life' stuff. Bad points: No fire notice - illegal. Not really a worry as room was on ground floor and windows opened from inside, but notice should be provided. Weird television, an ancient set with TWO digiboxes on top! To get programmes one had to go through quite a sequence of button-pushing in exactly the right order. Behind the chest on which the television a stood a tangle of wires pushing the chest out at least a foot from the wall. To use the hairdryer we had to remove the dressing table mirror behind which was the only other socket, also used for the kettle! There was only one bedside light and cabinet for the one double and one single bed. Only one pillow per person and one large and one small towel for two people. No spare blankets. No extractor fan in bathroom. Only 6 bulbs of 9 in chandelier. There was a crack in the washbasin overflow and the striplight above the washbasin did not work in spite of the two grubby bits of string tied to it.
