"Wonderful stay. Would come back."

10.0

The owners and staff were all very welcoming and ensured we had a nice stay. We came with a small child and they enjoyed the attention from the owners who was very kind, even when the child was throwing tantrums. On leaving the owner stayed with us as we waited for a taxi and our child said they liked her after we got in the car.

Nothing comes to mind. But it is asking me to write two or three sentences. So I am writing that much.

"Sweet little ryokan in Takayama"

10.0

Run by a welcoming couple, great breakfast, lovely location (our room overlooked the river), really lovely and clean baths that can be used privately.

Nothing - it is great!

"Interesting stay in Takayama: great onsen, needs some improvements but the staff is lovely"

7.0

Staying at Sumiyoshi Ryokan is a dear memory to me. The staff is truly warm and charming. They receive guests with a cup of tea and they make sure you're properly taken care of and fed. The onsen is a magical place where you can relax in the hot mountain water with silence. The meals were very complete and detailed. The house can get quite cold (it was -10 degrees outside during the night) and the staff wants to make sure you're warm, so they have lots of heaters inside the rooms to keep you comfortable. The futon was comfortable and the duvet felt like sleeping inside a cloud. I enjoyed that feeling. I will forever remember the owner coming to the door and then outside of the ryokan to wave us goodbye and bow. It was very emotional.

Even tough the staff and ryokan owners are lovely, the ryokan needs some renovations to live up to the guest's expectations and comfortable stay. The cold could get in because the windows are old and single-plane and then the sliding doors are made of paper, so even though we had Air Con, it was a waste of energy trying to heat up the room. If the house had better insulation, they wouldn't need as many heaters and guests would be more comfortable. There were also some scratched walls without paint anymore or the toilet and bath in the room was pretty old and very cold to go to at night. Another recommendation would be to have more attention to the cleanliness of certain items. For example, in the bathroom there was a tray near the sink with a used hairbrush with hairs from a previous guest and some dust. I believe the carpets in the common areas could also be replaced, as well as the common slippers. I'd leave a recommendation for future guests as well: staying in a ryokan is a totally different experience than staying in a hotel, so manage your expectations accordingly, as it may feel at times intrusive or overwhelming to have the staff coming in your room multiple times to ask you questions or alert you on dinner and breakfast time. It can also be difficult if you want to just chill in your room and lay down during the day, as they will take away your futon so basically you don't have a bed or resting place. I saw someone else leaving a comment saying how this felt like staying with your japanese grandmother, and it can feel like that for a westerner, but try to enjoy the experience as best as you can! It's a unique one.

"Cutest little ryokan"

10.0

Really characterful inn with lovely, attentive and caring staff. We were greeted with matcha tea and cookies and a warm fire. The mini private onsen was gorgeous and had such an atmosphere! Will definitely remember our time here.

The insulation is bad in old Japanese houses, it's to be expected, but the heaters were always running so it was fine!
