Distinction Mackenzie Country Hotel

Great hotel a short drive from Mt Cook. Rooms are spacious, quiet, and comfortable with great beds, showers, room for luggage and toiletries. Buffet supper in the dining room was good with lots of variety. Was with a tour group but had assigned dining times. Our room was on the second floor and the balcony overlooked a green space near residential housing. Pleasant staff. Washer and dryer on main floor. Several wings of rooms.

A bit old but comfortable and cost effective. We didn’t love the shower bath, but staff were nice and parking was easy.

We haven’t stayed in a hotel this bad for many years! Actually, we were very surprised that NZ Great Rail Journeys would use this hotel for their tour groups considering the cost of this trip. It’s listed as a three-star hotel, but I think it barely deserves one star. First of all, we felt it was dirty in conjunction with it being so dated, I couldn’t even assign an era… 70’, 80’s, 90’s…badly in need of a total gut and redo. There was no security that we could tell, and doors to some corridors were unlocked. It also did not seem that there was 24-hour front desk staff or management available overnight. When members of our group came for breakfast, the front doors to the lobby were locked until staff did arrive. The bathroom was unacceptable with a sign posted about no hot water after 20 minutes. Water on the floor would entail an extra charge. What hotel does that? And why should the bathroom flood anyway? My husband and I took very short, uncomfortable showers for fear that we would encounter cold water. There were also no electrical outlets in the bathroom at all for hair dryer or curling irons. We had to remove the TV to the floor and from the desk where it had been placed in front of the only mirror in the room and to use the only easily accessible electrical outlets in the room. I think I recall that the mattresses were comfortable, but I would hate to really know how clean they were. The sheets seemed ok and bathroom towels were clean as well. The public rooms seemed in disarray with staff only doors gaping open displaying the mess behind. The dining room was acceptable and breakfast was also adequate. I don’t know what these rooms cost per night but anything over $100 is too much. Overall, I don’t recommend this hotel. There must be better choices in town.

The staff had difficulties adding an extra night to the reservation and supplying a king-sized bed as requested.

No doubt that the hotel needs updating hopefully quite soon. Bathrooms need replacing showers temperamental poor flow. However, warm welcome from general manager and team, very helpful staff. Bed very comfortable, dinner (carvery) delicious. Breakfast varied and tasty. Well positioned for visiting Southern Alps.
