OYO 1836 Hotel Shila International

Good location and quite connected to all nearby shops and market Well connected to air, rail and metro

The location was good but apart from that nothing else

There were no lifts, cleanliness was not upto mark. Also we had booked triple rooms but the rooms were double bed and we ended up sleeping on floor.

Small dingy rooms that are not up to par with a standard chain hotel. Any visitor from abroad will find it hard to stay here

Thoroughly average budget hotel. Would score 1/10 in any other country, but par for the course in city centres across India. Staff were friendly however & location great for the main sights.

First room was cramped & dark with small barred windows overlooking the busy highway overpass. Bathroom an odd setup with a window shared with the adjoining staff toilet. Windowsill littered with used bottles & shards of glass, floor covered with lavae that the next day had erupted into flies, shower head barely worked (although subsequently fixed when raised). Second room much better, but bathroom hadn't been cleaned, previous guest's towel still hanging up, bin not emptied etc. Room had a distinct smell of rat. On one occasion I caught a glimpse of a rodent escaping under the door. As I say, wouldn't be tolerated in most other countries, but for whatever reason this level of hygiene is the norm in budget options throughout Indian cities, hence I've scored it accordingly, 6/10, mostly down to the nice staff.

The location is the biggest asset. You can get conveyance to any place in Kolkata from here. Most importantly, you can explore the nearby places by walking.

The noise from the traffic. The toilet needs to be more secured. The lobby in front of the room makes the stay a bit uncomfortable. One piece of advice to fellow travellers: Don't order food here.

Room is normal... No hot water for bath... It's good but not very good...
