Clifton Villa - Southport

A short walk from the Railway Station took me to the Hotel and a small double room with en suite facilities that looked quite new. The owner grabbed my bag and took me up to the room and explained where everything was. He was very friendly and helpful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. A front door key and a room key were provided on arrival and I felt very secure during my stay. I was travelling alone so the small double was quite big enough, and there was more than enough tea, coffee, milk and sugar plus bottled water. Good mobile signal, free wifi and a modern TV. Geographically the Hotel couldn't have been in a better location for my needs. Situated halfway between the Railway Station and the Promenade, and just behind Lord Street, everything you need was on the doorstep.

The second floor room was accessed by a narrow, steep staircase. It wouldn't be a problem for younger people but my 75 year old hips and knees were complaining a bit. Especially as I had been out walking around local nature reserves for three days. This would not deter me from making a return visit but I would book a first floor room next time.

Nice quiet location, close to all the shops, bars, restaurants, parks and sea front. We stayed to attend the Flower Show, which was just a short walk away at Victoria Park. Aytach, the Turkish owner, was very nice, helpful and welcoming. He recommended places to eat, some offered discount to guests of Clifton Villa. The family room on the 2nd floor was spacious and clean with nice quality bedding, tea & coffee facilities including biscuits and bottles of water.

If I had to pick at anything, it would be the hanging space. This could be resolved by rearranging furniture and adding more hangers. The shower cubicle could do with a grab rail. I only mention this because I had a knee replacement this year and I was worried about slipping.

I've never stayed in a hotel like this, seen the owner once when he very nicely picked me up from the train station. Then never seen again, there was no reception, no bar,the bed was very uncomfortable, I had people shouting and swearing one night in the corridor and the room next door no one there to ask them to stop. There was no room cleaning or bed changing or in fact if you needed any service you had to send a text. I can't comment on staff because I never saw anyone so like I say I've never stayed in a hotel quite like it. Not quite sure where the 4 stars came from.
