"A charming, characterful hotel which could be truly wonderful with some effort."

7.0

The included continental breakfast was good, particularly the prepared fresh fruit. Every staff member we spoke to was friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and comfortable. The property is interesting, characterful and fairly well situated. The additional cost full cooked breakfast was indeed a full choice and nicely cooked. Parking was easy and plentiful.

Booking.com doesn't tell you that only a continental breakfast is included and that a cooked breakfast costs an extra (May 26) £8 pp per day. In our room, two taps needed maintenance, as did the toilet cistern, which had apparently been 'misbehaving' for a long time. That's not good management. We ate dinner in the restaurant on the first evening only - let's just say that was an opportunity to impress that the hotel (or chain owners) sadly missed. Certain aspects were either just ok or fine - the vegetables were frankly dire. The generally well-stocked bar was let down by the pump beer - or lack of it...and the pump itself which dispensed a 50-50 mix of beer and air, and 'had needed fixing for some time'....unfortunately again, it gives an impression of neglect.

Room No 2 was very tatty and tired The leather sofa had no leather on the top cushions...they were covered with a throw... furniture had missing handles...the pillows were cheap foam and the quilt was cheap filled... the bathroom had a rusty bin...a loose hand rail to the bath... dusty pipes showing ..mildew and holes where fitting and fixtures had been... and was generally old and of poor quality... replaced ceiling lights had uneven plaster around the fitting.. There was a plastic orchid placed in a wall cavity... this is not a four star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. ..and certainly not worth £360 for 2 nights On check out I brought this to the attention of the check out member of staff... who stated that they had had first class reviews and Room 2 was a popular room... I have taken photos of the room... I will be emailing the owners of the hotel to express how disappointed I we are. We live in the village of West Chiltington...and we booked the hotel since we had a large family gathering and it meant we could just pop down late evening and relax before returning in the morning to entertain our guests... We are so disappointed in the lack of acknowledgement from the member of staff that the room was less than standard.... please be aware of this if anyone is thinking of booking this hotel...there are many other lovely hotels here in this beautiful part of west sussex which are both cheaper and of a high standard....
