The Plough Inn Wigston

Location, parking, wifi, beds comfy, good price.

This hotel is adequate for a base to visit the area and totally ok for a (relatively) cheap no frills stay for a heavy sleeper. As with all hotels, there are positives and negitives. None of the following observations prevented the hotel from achieving it's basic purpose. Advertised as a 4*, it's best to use the price to set expectations instead of referring to the website. Check in was in a noisy (and, weird for 2025, smokey) bar area. The pub's young barmaid was nice, took the money and showed us the room but nothing other than that. I assumed that the mobile phone number written on a scrap of paper in the key fob was an out of hours number but no other information was provided. Some fixtures broken and some advertised room facilities absent. Radiator was v.hot with valve on '0' when we arrived and the room was uncomfortably hot - luckily it stopped on its own after a few hours. Cleanliness average but rubbish left from previous guest (I hope he had a nice birthday) and a deep clean desperately needed. It's a small building in a pub car park and suffered from usual pub noise, e.g music, drunken shenanigans, arguments, which some may have been able to sleep through (but not me). Thankfully only one night was bad out of 4. The church bells are not in the hotel's control but go on throughout the night so did disrupt a good night's sleep.

We prefer to use smaller independent hotels rather than the big chains, so this one suited us as it was in a good location for us to walk to a relatives birthday party in South Leicester. The rooms themselves are called 'chalets' which means they are in an outbuilding at the back of a busy pub. We found the soundproofing to be more than adequate - particularly as we had the room nearest the garden. We were given a warm welcome by the bar staff and there was everything in the room that we would have wanted.

The main thing we didn't like was the price. We appreciate that the business has to make money, but charging £85.00 for a room worth no more that £50.00 smelt of unnecessary profiteering. The room could have been cleaner, and we weren't 100% certain that the bed sheets had been changed. Things such as ill fitting toilet seats, rusty radiators, shower curtain held up with a bit of chain screwed to the ceiling, TV remote with no writing on it, etc, would be fine in a £50.00 room, but not so much at this price point. It was very hot during our stay, and the windows opening directly into the car park meant that we weren't sure about leaving them open during the night. All in all we think that these people deserve the custom more than the Premier Inn up the road, but should we need to stay again (which we probably would if we need to) we'd definitely be negotiating the price!

Very warm in room seating area outside room would make a difference and a mini fridge to store milk and cold drinks would enhance the stay. Yea bags coffee supplied but there was no milk left in room.
