Location was better than other side of Colombia

My stay at Hotel El Retiro was unfortunately very disappointing. The room did not have air conditioning, and guests are only provided with fresh towels every three days. If you require a clean towel sooner, there is an additional charge. The shower drainage was poor, leaving water pooled inside the shower area. Housekeeping was also lacking. During our stay, rubbish was not removed from the room. For example, a yoghurt container and spoon were left in the room for the entire stay without being cleared away. Breakfast was one of the biggest letdowns. The photos advertised online did not reflect what was actually offered. Each morning the options were limited to eggs or arepas, and the arepas often seemed reheated rather than freshly made. The coffee was below average, and requests for alternatives such as tea or toast felt like an inconvenience. Loud music was also played during breakfast from 7:00 a.m., which was not particularly relaxing. Service was inconsistent. One staff member was helpful, but overall assistance from reception was lacking. Access to the hotel required buzzing in, and reception was sometimes unattended, making entry difficult. Privacy was also an issue. On our final day, I had taken my suitcase downstairs to meet a driver but had not yet checked out. While my partner was still in the room, a cleaner entered. Even after being told the room was still occupied, she did not leave immediately. Another negative was the smell on Level 4. The hallway outside the room frequently smelled of fried bacon, which was quite unpleasant. The room key was a large traditional key rather than a key card, making it inconvenient to carry around. Given the high online ratings, I expected a much better experience. In the end, I chose to buy breakfast elsewhere and bring it back to the hotel. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel and found the experience to be poor value for money.

The hotel was quiet, family friendly and walking distance to shopping and dining destinations. The suite had plenty of space for our family. The included breakfast was hearty and filling.

My only complaint is the hard mattress. I stuffed pillows under me to get some cushioning. I was so happy to be home in my own bed after a week on a mattress that felt like I was sleeping on concrete.

They charge for the 2 bottles of water they place in the room… That’s like basic.
