Kurokawa Onsen Okunoyu

Private baths were nice.

I came here with my partner, expecting to be able to go to a mixed bath together. Turns out, they state it is a mixed bath, but in reality it isn't. The mixed area is reserved for men, and it is in no way comfortable for a women to be present there. That would be fine, if the women only bath was better maintained, but it was extremely limited and not well maintained. This made us feel like women were not really welcome in the public bath area - not as advertised. Also, this place in general was running down. The swimming pool was half filled and not useable. The sauna was closed. On the way to the dining room, there was a really unmaintained area that we have to walk through, which clearly shows this place is not taken care of. For the amount of money we paid (close to $600), this was very disappointing, especially as we have been to other ryokans for less and had a much better experience.

The area is beautiful, gardens are nice, river is lovely. Dinner was nice.

Annex building is incredibly cold. Air conditioner is not able to warm it up, so we asked for a heater and it took some time and arguing to get it. I understand fire safety concerns, but all initial answers were “no, we can not provide heater” and I felt stupid that I bag to convince hotel team to give it. But even with the heater it was still cold. Cleaning is not good, dust was everywhere. Also be ready that the room is very small, I didn’t expect it from ryokans. Mixed gender onsen is very small and full of men who came here from onsen hoping. All these men looked weird, they were waiting for women to come. By some reason, swimming suits or even towels are not allowed, I guess to keep these men visiting. Almost no Japanese stuff works here. Dinner was fine, but we felt rushed - dishes were coming too soon, when we even didn’t finish the previous one. I regret staying here unfortunately, it doesn’t work it’s money.
