Shanuo Beach Bungalows

We stayed in this small hotel in Zanzibar and really loved it. It feels very local, natural and simple, but in the best way — cozy and real. The view to The Rock Restaurant is beautiful and around are many small boutique places and cafés. From here you can take a small boat to see the starfishes or go to Blue Lagoon. We saw dolphins in the sea very close to the shore! You can also walk to nearby cafes and small hotels. Having a car is recommended. The beach here is quiet: no sellers, no dancers and no people offering services. Nothing disturbs your rest. The owner is a warm and kind person that you feel like home. This is the real Zanzibar not like chain hotels. The place has its own vibe and soul. It is definitely not for people who want very luxury hotels with shiny things because everything here is very natural and simple. It is for those who want to feel the real local life. We already know that will want to come back.

We loved Shanuo. Gillian and the staff are very sweet and helpful, there are little details that have been planned with much thought (loved the bowls of water under staircases to wash the sand off your feet), breakfasts were great, rooms were clean, hammocks are super cool, they care about cleaning up the ocean, the beach, blue wave, and the Rock are right there, and the property is pretty and homely. You can also buy some mosquito repellent at the reception, and get help planning trips around the island.
