Nanakamado

浴場のお湯の調節が難しかったです。 お部屋のお風呂は最高でした。

Super cozy, relaxing ryokan. Meals were excellent and the place super nice. Staff available and nice. Highly recommended for a relaxing stop.

お風呂が源泉掛け流し24時間いつでも入れて最高でした。因みに3時半チェックインから翌日チェックアウトまで合計5回入りました（最高でした）😆

しいていえばコーヒーが部屋にあればもっと良かったかな…ぐらいです。

静かにのんびりできた。

内風呂の温度など計って無く、風呂に入ろうとしたところ、熱くて入れたもんじゃない。

So, to give you a sense of their great hospitality, I must tell you that it was the end of January, and I had rented a car from the southern city of Kagoshima where winters are balmy so rental cars don't usually come prepared for winter driving, and Nanakamado is up on the foothills of Mount Kuju much further north in the island of Kyushu, and the night I was to stay there it snowed, not terribly heavily but just enough to coat the road and my car had zero traction and just couldn't go uphill at all, and we were stuck at a spot that, as it turns out, was just within a kilometer or so from the ryokan but we wouldn't know that because it was in the mountains and it was already after sundown and was quite dark outside. We called up Nanakamado for help and thank goodness they called in a local warden came to the rescue with tire chains, so eventually we made it safely to Nanakamado to stay the night. But we had to wait for almost an hour for the warden to arrive (not complaining, just relating the fact) and so we missed the dinner service time and that was clearly communicated to us when we called Nanakamado for help (again not complaining, because we fully understand their kitchen staff had work and off hours). Even so, when we got to the ryokan they had put together a simple but very thoughtful supper waiting for us in our rooms so we could just stay in and not have to faff around in the cold and the snow. And, the next morning, at breakfast, they served us back all the goodies that we had missed the night before, so it was an extra sumptuous breakfast (minus of course any alcoholic beverages). But this just goes to show how exceptional Japanese hospitality can be. Very memorable stay at Nanakamado we had indeed.

The baths were not quite hot enough, which was a bit unfortunate, but I understand there's a bit of a problem in Japan right now of too much natural onsen water being drawn and supply running low in some places. We had to stay very close to the faucet where the hot water came out to keep warm.
