Matsushima Koumura

traditional japanese experience was good for us and our children and grandchildren. the owners were lovely friendly and helpful. we loved the onsen: first onsen for our boys.

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The inn has a lot of charm and character, although it is somewhat limited in terms of facilities and amenities. I received a complimentary sample bottle of local sake when I checked in. It was delicious. There was a private shower, toilet and bathtub in the single rooms. My room had its own wireless router and the internet speed was good. Though there are not many power points you can use for charging (I counted a total of 3 in the room, not including the one next to the bathroom sink) The futon is retro but it was comfy. The room wasn't cold as it was spring but there is a air conditioner for you to adjust the temperature yourself

You really need to have a car to enjoy using this property. The location of the inn is quite far from the tourist attractions, or restaurants and there are no shuttle buses or even any local buses that take you to and from the station. I took the taxis to and fro everyday during my stay which certainly cost quite a bit of money. A taxi ride to Matsushima station for example will cost you a little over 1000 JPY. The walls (floors) are a little thin and you can hear stomping and doors closing. I wasn't sure what to do for dinner because many of the nearby restaurants close at 5pm. Since this is a seaside town and people are expected to have their breakfasts and dinners at a ryokan, and this inn does not provide any, I settled with just bringing back snacks from the touristy areas. The electric kettle didn't work though I didn't mind since there was free coffee and tea most times of the day at the lobby. There is a singular vending machine at the lobby (it does not serve alcohol). The inn has 3 levels, but no working elevator. It seems there is no plan to repair it as the owners don't have the funds to do so. You will have to lug your suitcases up yourself if you are situated on the 3rd floor, so it's not very accessible if you have disabilities.

お風呂のシャワーの水圧が個人的にはマイナス評価でした。
