"Awesome experience and a great way to disconnect."

9.0

The 3 bedroom apartment that we rented at Casa Blanca was situated on the top floor and was very spacious and comfortable. The covered balcony overlooked the ocean and was great for dining and relaxing. We seldom used the air conditioner since, with the windows open, a constant breeze flowed through the apartment. Sleeping was wonderful and the beds and pillows were very comfortable. The kitchen had all the amenities we needed for eating breakfast and lunch although the power does have a tendency to go out during the day. Make sure to shop before leaving Cancun (we shopped at the Walmart superstore) as the amenities in the village are very limited although you can find bread, beer, cheese and other small items at the local "convenience" stores. We ate out for supper as the village has 5 or so restaurants that are quite nice and tasty.

The internet is very spotty, especially from the third floor so, if you need access to the internet, this may be a problem. The internet is a little bit more reliable on the first floor. That being said, this is a very small fishing village with limited internet access anywhere. It is a good idea to have a car. We landed in Cancun and rented one. The drive takes about 6 hours and the road is paved all the way and very direct although the final stretch between Mahahual and Xcalak has many potholes. Be very attentive while driving and do not attempt in the dark! The sargassum can be a problem but it is great for the fishing. You do get used to the smell but the beaches are not user friendly for children or beach goers.

The property manager was excellent. Likely the best property option for staying in Xcalak.

There was a electric power outage affecting the entire town for the majority of our stay

"We had a great time fly fishing but were disappointed that Casa Blanca had deteriorated since our last stay there two ye"

6.0

Casa Blanca is in a great location in the town of Xcalak. It’s very convenient for access to fishing, restaurants, and exploring the community. It’s spacious and the rooftop area provides an exceptional observation point to see the Caribbean, the town and the lagoons.

This was our second stay at Casa Blanca, the first being in the spring of 2022. The property has declined noticeably in those two years. Some of it is the unavoidable result of the grueling salt air and humidity (corroded fixtures, etc.), but some of it also seems to be from a lack of attention and proper, necessary maintenance (collapsed palapa that once shaded the roof now lies in a heap of trash behind the house, for example). Water was leaking from one of the air conditioning units on the roof, causing it to pool and puddle. Chairs were broken and yet still lying around and taking up space rather than being repaired or properly disposed of. One of the A/C units in one of our rooms was broken, making for a warm night of sleep. The electrical grid in Xcalak is unreliable and lately has been failing (local friends explained to me it’s an ongoing issue), and so when one day we returned from fishing to find the electricity was down, it wasn’t too surprising. But the property’s backup generator wasn’t working either, so there was no electricity for several hours, which made for quite a hot night until the power was restored in town about midnight. I’ve been traveling to Xcalak for almost 20 years, so I’ve come to expect disruptions with electricity, and I also realize it’s a remote village without many of the modern conveniences of the first world. That’s one of the reasons I go there. But when I booked the property for June, when it’s quite hot, I did so expecting the air conditioning to work properly. I’ve stayed multiple times in other properties without air conditioning, so I don’t mind not having it. But when I pay a higher rate and expect to have cool air, it’s disappointing when it doesn’t work. Now, besides the one bedroom, it did work the rest of the week. But generally speaking, you should know the photos you’re seeing on Caribbean Casa Blanca’s website or booking services are older images from before the place fell into disrepair.

"Dirty, shady and rotten"

1.0

Nothing

It was extremely dirty, musty and a lot of things were rotten. The landlords didn't answer us once. We stood in front of the accommodation for 2 hours and had to try to find the landlords through locals. Catastrophic!!!

"DISAPPOINTMENT"

2.0

I was fascinated by the pictures in booking but the reality was much different, especially regarding the cleanliness of the place. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

I was mostly disturbed by the rude behavior of the owner and the broken promise to refund the amount for the second night, which we refused because the apartment was in a very bad condition, moldy and dirty. You have no connection to the world because there is no signal and you cannot use a phone. When the owner's representative threatened me and photographed me without my permission, I had no way to contact the police. This experience completely ruined my trip to Mexico.
