We recently stayed at Lakes Edge Holiday Park in Tekapo and overall really enjoyed the campground. Unfortunately, during our stay I had a tripping accident on one of the pathways leading from the camp kitchen up to the hill where our motorhome was parked. The pathway was completely pitch black at night, and while walking carefully I hit one of the rocks outlining the path, rolled my ankle, and fell into the ditch beside it. I ended up with cuts and abrasions to my feet and legs, and have since found out I fractured my foot. We reported the incident to staff the following day and were disappointed by the response, which felt defensive and dismissive. We were told “accidents happen,” which is true, but this particular pathway felt unsafe due to the lack of lighting, handrails, uneven rocks, and the steep drop beside it. We requested a full refund as we didn’t yet know the extent of the injury and our trip had obviously been impacted. While the park did eventually honour a full refund (for our 2 night stay), it didn’t feel like something they were particularly willing to do. We were told the pathways cannot be lit due to Tekapo’s dark sky regulations, although many other areas of the campground were still illuminated. I understand the restrictions, but I do think more could be done to improve safety on these walkways. We still enjoyed our time in Tekapo and the campground itself had great facilities, but I wanted to share this so future guests are aware that some of the pathways can be quite dangerous at night.
