"Not our first stay, but probably our last"

6.0

Not our first visit, but it was our last. The scenery with the snow was awesome, and the fishing was as expected due to the weather. The service and advice from the fly shop staff was impeccable! However, our cabin (The Ashley) was absolutely awful. The furnace was broken as evidenced by the sign above the thermostat telling us to use the gas fireplace for heat. If not for finding the instructions for lighting the fireplace pilot hidden under the fire box near the wall, we would’ve needed to call for help. Using the fireplace might sound rustic and cozy to you, but it made the loft bedroom unbearably hot and the main floor bedroom uncomfortably cold. Walking on the main floor bathroom tile in bare feet was even worse. But we powered through, even though two smoke detectors clearly had no batteries (one detector high in the main living area was dangling by wires). Then there was the the stove. Not only did it look like it was picked from someone’s trash pile, the “hot surface” light was always on, and the electric burners were all ill-fitted, meaning the pots and pans all sat at a tilt. There were no other options since the restaurant is no longer open. I rely on a CPAP for good sleep, and I had to adapt so I could plug in my machine. The one available outlet in the main floor bedroom had a full power strip (with large power supplies taped to it) plugged in to the top gang of the outlet, and the bottom gang was not working. Fortunately, I carry my own 4-outlet extension cord, which I used to plug into the single working outlet, with the power strip and my CPAP plugged into it. The kitchen area is comprised of roughly two square-feet of counter area for food prep. We moved the coffee maker to the more spacious bathroom counter just to have enough room in the kitchen for dishes to dry. If bathroom counter and floor space is most important, The Ashley is for you! I’m all about roughing it from time to time, but I definitely expect better comfort and safety when paying almost $1,000 for a 3-day stay at what is misleadingly advertised as a “resort”. We’ll stay elsewhere for our annual outings.

Had a great stay! Wish the bar / restaurant was open. Nowhere nearby to eat or have a cocktail.

"Great 2 day Stay"

10.0

We booked the Harley Room - a studio unit - at Elk Springs. They have many units to choose from, but having refrigerator, microwave, and our own washer/dryer were important to us. Nice touch that there were rocking chairs on our front porch. We are new to fly fishing so had the Fly Shop arrange a guided tour for us (complete with all of the gear) with Patrick - great job teaching us to cast as well as finding some good places to fish from along both sides of the river. They are experiencing dry conditions right now - and the fly shop even called us to advise and see if we wanted to reschedule which was so thoughtful We came anyway and Patrick put us on plenty of groups of fish. After we each hooked a few in the "training section" we hit the main river. It was definitely running low - but my husband caught one about an hour into things. And the rest of our day was so enjoyable! It was wonderful to have our washer/dryer to clean up after a long day. Keep in mind mobile phone service is non-existent when you get close to the resort so really have it mapped out or contact them in advance for directions. The contactless check-in was perfect - our key was in our room and the wifi info (which worked great for somewhere so remote) was on the inside of our door.

"Wonderful stay at the resort"

8.0

We had a great time at this resort. Pros: Quiet area, nice restaurant (food much better than I anticipated), great fly shop. Cons: Wifi is pretty much dial up, Pay pond is poorly stocked (8 fish total when I was there), fly shop should stock items for the non-fly fishing areas downstream, fishing around the resort was TOUGH...good luck...you have to be a PRO to be able to catch anything. (we had to fish miles away). Also- why can't the fish in the pay pond be caught and the kitchen fry it right up--that would be a cool experience. I think the overall experience would be so much better if the resort would stock their own catch and release area. Check out Westover Farms near Rolla, Missouri-- they would be a great example of how great your resort could be. I would pay extra to have more fish around the resort instead of the long drive downstream. Most of us coming to your resort aren't fly fishing experts- we want to catch fish. Simplify it. Realize who your audience is. I think you could increase revenue immediately by making a few adjustments.

"Drive to the mountains"

10.0

We drove up to check out the area and loved the Elk Springs Resort area. We ate at the restaurant and it was delicious. We had the fish(trout) & fries and a cheeseburger & fries. The staff was friendly and answered all of our questions about the resort. We are planning to go back to fish and stay in one of the cabins.

"Relaxing, quiet and great fishing"

8.0

This is our second stay at Elk Springs Resort. We stayed in a Studio Cabin called The Jungle. It has a shared porch with only one rocker per unit. (Would really recommend at least 2 per unit) The cabin was comfortable but the decor just didn't make sense to me in this mountain cabin. I gave it a 4 because the cabin smelled clean (overly extreme smell of PineSol) and the bathroom was clean but the floor was not clean. Especially, under the little dining table and occasional chairs. I admit, I'm a little anal about the floors being clean. And I knocked something off the bedside table and found lots of dirt and hair behind and under the bed. EW That being said..we had fabulous meals in the Ellie May's Ole Mill Restaurant. We especially loved the Smoked Trout dip as an appetizer. The weather was rainy but we managed to enjoy lots of fishing and had a wonderful weekend.

"Wonderful over night trip!"

10.0

I booked this trip on a whim for our 16 year anniversary as a surprise for my husband. We always wanted to learn how to fly fish and this was a great opportunity. The trip to the resort was a great little back country trip in the mountains of West Virginia. Arriving to the resort was easy per directions from the website. The fly shop had a great selection and Patrick was very patient with me and listen to what I wanted. Helped pick out a great set of pants and boots to help with out guide trip. Our guide Kirk was awesome on patience and very knowledgeable. Considering I only have used spin rods for almost 30 years and this is very much a new experience. I’m pretty much hooked on fly fishing thanks to them. We had dinner at Elle’s the resort restaurant. Our ribeyes were cooked perfect and had great taste. The wait staff was very excellent in service. We stayed in the safari room at the lodge. The lodge was very nice and clean. Our whole trip was wonderful at Elk Springs Resort. We can not say thank you enough to the staff and especially Patrick and Kirk!

"Great Food"

10.0

My husband and I went her for a nice evening out, we were the only people in the restaurant (which was totally okay with us!) we had an appetizer of trout midges and entrees I had a pasta dish and my husband had a trout dish (the trout is what they are known for) it was absolutely delicious I don’t even like fish of any sort and I thought this tasted really good! We also bought a bottle of wine and had dessert all for about 85.00! We thought it was reasonably priced, the food was great and the staff was friendly. We want to come back and stay at one of their cabins as a get away soon!

"Beautiful place with delicious trout!"

10.0

After using Google maps and driving down a bumpy road that lead to a gate, we turned around and ended up making it to the Resort okay. There were signs off of 15, which we didn't make it to the first time. We enjoyed feeding the trout for $1 and watching them splash around! The friend trout dinner was delicious!! I also really liked Mommaw's peanut butter pie! It would be worth a trip if you're in the area!!

"Beautiful place"

8.0

Beautiful, Friendly off the beaten path. Mainly a trout fishing spot but also good to get away from the city life. Restraunt on site, little pricey but really good and fresh trout. We stayed in the farmhouse, large and would be great for a family or group of friends. We ride the motorcycle up and were mystified to how many great riding roads were close.
