National Exchange Hotel

Amazing. Great amenities - bar, restaurant, sitting areas, deck, backyard. Super helpful staff. Really relaxed yet social property - plenty of comfy sitting areas to enjoy conversation or write postcards, and, really liked no television (room 202) just a super lux comfortable room with great windows and next to the back lawn and outside table and chairs. Spotless clean. Easy parking. Super friendly staff and guests.

While the hotel is historic and well-located and decorated appropriately for the town of Nevada City, we found our room to be fantastically small and lighting very dim. It was difficult (but not impossible with several hunts for housekeepers..) to get basics: toilet paper, soap,etc. Staff IS friendly , but I think training is needed for them

Great get away for some quiet in the mist of business. Old town vibe - brings you back to the mid 1800's. Take some time to walk around and enjoy the sites. I couldn't but would love to when I wasn't on business.

A fabulous experience in the best hotel in the Nevada City-Grass Valley area. Owner spent millions renovating this spot and another in Grass Valley ... and it shows on the inside, with modern bathroom, spacious rooms (if you choose), period-style furniture, quiet hallways. Staff very helpful, including in the bar and restaurant -- both of which were excellent. No elevator (staff will assist with bags) or TV ... the latter being a good thing.

We had an absolutely lovely stay and are looking forward to making it an annual tradition! A great spot in itself and of course centrally located in Nevada City. Literally the only thing we'd wish for is a bathtub, but we also know that droughts are common and that may be part of the rationale for not having more of them in the hotel.

The bed was amazing , the sheets wow. The coffee bar in them with muffins was outstanding. Lola was so yummy. The staff were all kind and amazing .

It could be freshened up a bit . But nothing big

It was such a wonderful experience. We stayed in the annex. The parking behind was very convenient. The room was adorable. Shower was wonderful and bed comfortable. The robes provided are a nice touch. You can’t beat the location right downtown. I would stay again.

Beautiful building, with a fantastic restaurant and bar. The best restoration of a historical hotel that retains the charm of the period.

The staff left much to be desired. The fire alarm malfunctioned at midnight the second night we stayed there, it went off for 45 minutes before we decided to grab out things and go stay somewhere else. There was zero communication for the night clerk about what was going on, and all the guest, including young children, were left out in 32 degree cold for nearly an hour without any acknowledgement of the situation. When I returned the next day to checkout I was told the night would be refunded, which would have made the hospitality more reasonable, but I was never refunded. It was a terrible and expensive experience.

I want to give a big thank you to Lola's, especially to Lauren and Sarah E. They made my dining experience so pleasant and the food was on point! And Debbie at the front counter was sweet as pie! I can tell she really enjoys her job and sharing the history of the building! This was and continues to be my favorite hotel. 5 stars all the way!

My husband's great-great grandfather was a mining surveyor in Nevada City in the late 1800's, and after he had his arm blown off in a mining accident, he and his wife moved to San Francisco, but would stay at the National Exchange Hotel when they came back into town. We were very excited to be able to stay in the same hotel he did 144 years later! It was a fun experience, and a beautiful hotel. Sound travels, but that is part of staying in an old building. Expect to hear outside noises and don't complain about it. Othewise, stay at a Holiday Inn Express and have a sterile experience. The shower is absolutely amazing with excellent water pressure and hot water every morning. Breakfast is a muffin and coffee, but that was absolutely perfect for us to get our day going. We had dinner in the restaurant and spent several evenings in the bar. The food and drinks were wonderful. The Celtic band was absolutely amazing! All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They helped us search the register for our ancestor's signature and although we didn't find it, we hope to come back and do more exploring.
