Courtyard by Marriott Merida Downtown

Very nice hotel with comfortable rooms and incredibly friendly staff. The restaurant is good and the rooftop pool is a great bonus. The hotel feels quiet, clean and well kept throughout. Good value, would recommend. In terms of location, the hotel is around a 30-minute walk from the historic centre.

Location

Only one key card provided and would only allow one to be active. Every Courtyard by Marriot I’ve ever stayed at gave me 2 key cards even when I was staying alone. My family stayed with me and when we separated and stayed out we had to come down to the lobby and get whoever arrived last.

The Courtyard Marriott Merida Downtown is a complete disaster. I was given room 326 but I couldn’t sleep as there was a contruction site in front of my window which was noisy even at night! I asked the receptionist to give us another room but he explained that the there was no other room available except for the 509, which was away from the construction site. However, the room was communicating with another one (not what I paid for) and the shower was not working great (very slow draining). I asked multiple times the hotel to do something to make our stay more bearable, but they couldn’t upgrade us to a better room or refund us so we can try another hotel. Indeed, they indicated « it wasn’t there fault there was a construction site near by », so apparently it was ok not to present any excuse and to keep our money. The next day, they tried to give us room 523 which was on the same area as the first one (near the construction site so too noisy), and then room 605. Room 605 smelled damp and the door couldn’t fully open as the floor was swollen, it looked like there was a water damage recently. The receptionist kindly offered us an Axe deodorant to handle the smell. At this point however, my fiancée and I were tired so we just stop trying and kept the room. During all of our stay, we never had any word from the hotel to say they were sorry, nor any kind of compensation (aside from the free Axe deodorant). The service and the rooms are awful: it is noisy (even in the room not near the construction site area, I had to shut down the ventilation system and to unplug the mini-fridge!), desperately need a refreshment (shower is not clean and the USB-charger plugs by the bed did not work in room 605). It is far from the four stars standards, and I have visited 3 rooms so I should know. My advice is to do yourself a favor by avoiding the Courtyard Marriott Merida Downtown, given the price you deserve better.
