The location is just amazing, directly at the sea, with a nice and clean beach area with many spots in the shade. It is a great place for snorkeling, there are so many fish! They offer free floatables to tie yourself to while snorkeling so you don't get run over by one of the boats and we got great advice on where to find the best spots. The food was tasty, not as expensive as we feared and had many vegetarian options - we stayed three nights and had breakfast, lunch an dinner there every day. The plankton tour was great. The music from bora bora (the club next door) didn't really bother us during the week, it got more crowded and louder on the weekend though.

The bathroom is pretty open in the back of the room, it's still very warm at night in the room, but the fan helps. Bring a lot of mosquito spray and cash - there is a five percent fee if you pay by card. There was a bit of a misunderstanding about the price of the transport to the island, they offered us a private transport via Barú with less time on the open sea, which we opted for because of my sensitive stomach and because the price was about as high as the transport via direct boat from Cartagena. When we arrived, they told us, the direct transport is actually a lot cheaper. But these were just minor inconveniences during an all in all very paradise-like stay, we would definitely come back again!

"A beautiful rustic hostel on a paradise island, with a close connection to nature."

9.0

The location is excellent, especially its SW aspect on Isla Grande which means it catches the sun, including a very beautiful sunset. Whilst there is not a 'picture postcard white sandy beach', there is access to a swimming area in front of the hostel, so the effect is actually the same. 'No sandy beach' is really not an issue! There is an attached restaurant, and although it is technically a separate business to the hostel, practically it is like having a restaurant in the hostel. The food was good, and the hostel bar served a great selection of tasty drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The room was basic but comfortable, and the room we stayed in had a seafront balcony, which was truly beautiful. The ethos of the hostel - to respect and be closer to nature - was very comforting, and we definitely felt connected to nature during our stay because the plants and wildlife flow beautifully through the site. Going to sleep to the sound of waves breaking on the shore, and waking to exotic birdsong, is truly a great privilege and an amazing experience. There are plenty of comfortable spaces for people to relax, whether they want to sunbathe, relax in the shade, socialise and play board games, or sit at the bar - it felt very private, and not at all cramped. At the same time as we were there, there were also one or two larger groups (of five or so) who were still having a great time. There are activities that can be booked on arrival, such as swimming with bioluminescent plankton (which was amazing), snorkelling on a local reef (also amazing), kayaking, snorkelling and so on. These are advertised very clearly on a display board in the central area of the hostel. The staff were friendly and helpful - they recommended Mary Cartagena Travel for the journey between Cartagena and Isla Grande. The other guests were friendly, relaxed and respectful.

The mosquito net for our bed could have fitted better - unfortunately we awoke to find about a dozen mosquitoes on the inside of the net. The Bora Bora beach club does create some noise from their music, which you can hear 1000-1700, though it wasn't too bad. We also heard music from the main village on the island on the Saturday night, which probably continued to around midnight. This would not stop me from staying there again, but just something to be aware of. The young lads who took us on our bioluminescence swim tour played music loudly on their phones during the canoe journey through the mangroves, which would otherwise have been quite magical and romantic. I still greatly enjoyed the excursion, but I don't think they really appreciated that guests would have preferred it to be quiet and peaceful, so they can 'connect with nature under the stars'. It also might be useful to warn people about the nature of the boat journey to and from the islands (which was bumpy and wet!). I understand this isn't the hostel's responsibility, but I suspect we weren't the first passengers to arrive with our clothes and belongings wetter than we had expected!

"Absolutely amazing"

10.0

If you’re looking for something authentic, peaceful, and truly heartfelt, this is the place you need to stay. The space is deeply rooted in the local community, with everything, from the food to the decor, reflecting genuine care, cultural respect and respect to the environment. It’s a family run place, and you can feel that in every detail, the warm greetings, the thoughtful conversations, and the way they go out of their way to make you comfortable. This is how every hostel/hotel should be.

That I only stayed two nights!!
