Xanadu Luxury Villas & Retreat Zanzibar

We stayed at Xanadu for a week after our safari and it was a wonderfully luxurious, romantic and secluded experience. The decor was beautiful and unique. It truly felt like an idyllic escape worthy of the name Xanadu. We had the Mawingu sea-front villa, which we believed was the best located in the resort. The private pool was a good size and deep enough to properly enjoy. Our butler Muambo was exceptional: attentive and thoughtful. He created many personalised surprises for us and arranged meals in different parts of the resort so we experienced every corner of the property. The food was some of the best we’ve had on holiday (delicious, high-quality, varied and well balanced portions). The massage was amazing. We also booked external activities through guest relations. While they were more expensive than booking separately, their level of care and follow-up to ensure we were having a good experience made it worthwhile for us. The water was incredibly warm and pleasant at high tide. A few vendors walked along the public beach, however they were respectful when we politely declined. Xanadu is an outstanding place to completely switch off, perfect if you want privacy and romance rather than a social atmosphere. It is ideally suited for a special occasion such as a honeymoon or anniversary.

The beach is tidal, so swimming depends heavily on the time of day. There was some garbage washed up on the public beach, which was unfortunate but not within the hotel’s control.

The customer service was amazing! We only stayed for 2 night but would have loved to stay for longer. The team went above and beyond in helping us in anyway possible. And these small touches made it a truly enjoyable and comfortable trip! Would definitely visit again soon

Sehr schöne Anlage, sehr schönes landestypisches, aber gepflegtes Ambiente, überaus freundliches Personal, auf individuelle Wünsche wird gerne eingegangen (z. B. die normale Frühzeit bis 10.00 etwas zu „verlängern“ für Langschläfer)

Man kann nicht aus der Hotel Anlage gehen, nur am Strand spazieren, es gibt keine Infrastruktur drum herum, keine abendliche Ablekung / Shopping/ kein TV Schwimmen im Meer nur bei Flut möglich Das Essen ist oft mehr „Schein als Sein“, für europäische Gaumen oft komisch gewürztes Seefood, im internationalen Vergleich (z.B. mit asiatischen Luxushotels) insgesamt zu teuer (eine 60 Min. Massage kostet 150 Dollar)

Amazing accommodation and service! Unforgettable experience !!!

Xanadu was a dream of its own. This magical Afro-Arabian oasis of dhow wood, adobe, palm trees and pure white sand embraces you with its solitude, calm and its pure inherent magic. I've never seen a place like it before where you feel at home instantaneously. There is no separation between the interiors and the exteriors, the spaces just flow effortlessly and continuously as one big comforting presence surrounding you everywhere. The beach flows into your rooms and your room flows back to the beach, in one stunning continuum. Have you stayed in a place where you didn't even need a key for your room and you just felt THAT SAFE? Xanadu was that precedent for me. Complimenting this mesmerizing architecture, art work and the most beautiful beach I've seen, is the grace of its staff, at the head of which is the wonderful and one-and-only, the lady herself - Miss Leigh, from her receiving us every time we're back from an excursion to her faring us goodbye at 3:00am in the morning, she was the constant maestra that kept the cadence and rhythm of this magical place running like a clock. Our wonderful butler Mr. Mike, was a prince of his own right, made us comfortable and taken care every minute during our stay. He's a ninja who knows when you need something and makes it happen with a snap. The food itself needs another chapter of praise, everything is freshly produced, farm-and-sea-to-table style. I've had the tastiest lobster thermidor in my life in Zanzibar! this for the books for sure. Thanks to the amazing local chefs and farmers affiliated to this gem.
