"Perfect Stay in Hokitika; Modern, Clean, great location and fair price"

10.0

Everything. The location in Hokitika is great as a base for trips up and down the coast or inland for sightseeing, hikes etc. The hotel is also in a perfect location in the town. Right near the main areas, but one street over so its quiet. Within a block or so of the main street and areas with restaurants etc. And just a couple blocks from the beach. The hotel is relatively new as the owners bought the run down building and re-configured it and remodeled before and during covid. Our room was essentially a good sized one bedroom apartment (lots of room). They really thought about the design and details. Like each room has its own water heater and wifi (or at least the sign in), and plenty of plugs in the right places. Bed was very comfortable. The shower is large, bathroom is good size but not a lot of space to put your stuff. I used the kitchen counter for my toiletries and my wife used the counter around the sink. So it worked out. Large kitchen table with 2 chairs, which also doubled as desk for me (with a plug close to the table). Didn’t use the kitchen but it seemed to be set up well with all kinds of cooking utensils, bowls, pots etc and plates and glasses, very well organized. Loved all the attention to antique fire department pieces round the unit (old bronze fireman hat, nozzles and other paraphernalia) and even a fire pole in one corner (for show). And the old fire trucks in front and on the side of the building. Free parking behind the hotel. Note the hotel does not have a reception or on site staff. But during the day the cleaning ladies are there…very friendly, helpful with suggestions of places to go and things to do..etc. And the owner was very quick to respond to messages. Wi-Fi worked perfectly. Website photos are an accurate depiction of the ho tel The price was fair. Overall, I would highly suggest staying here while in Hokitika or the area.

After driving 7 hours, we had some frustration with the lobby door (room lock worked fine) due to vague instructions. They send you a code to use for the lobby door and your room and instructions The instructions could have been better, and I was not the only one to have a problem I tried several times entering the numbers. Didnt work. i tried several different ways (including * instead of #) . but would not work. i tried maybe half a dozen times. My wife out of frustration yelled at me and tried ...and failed. Eventually I tried too many times and set off an alarm and it locked me out for a few minutes. But by accident I figured out that you cannot just press the first number, as i was doing. You have to touch the key pad lightly (not enough to press a number ) to turn it on (lights up), then press your numbers ,and then # (the instructions said press ...check or tick ....which there was none). The next day I saw a new guest struggling as I had, and I showed them what to do .
