Moffat Independent Hostel

Very nice hostel in a green neighbourhood. Feels old (in a good way) and comfortable at the same time. All is there that I could wish for in a hostel, including very kind hosts.

We booked this room last minute, as we were travelling from Chester to Aberdeen and wanted to stop somewhere in the middle. Well - we will definitely be back! It's a great location, surrounded by plenty of hills for walking, and it's the nicest 'hostel' I've ever been in. We were the only guests, so did get a bit of free reign around the facilities, but there was plenty of space, so I imagine it would have felt the same even if it was full. On one side of the building there was a huge self-catering kitchen, which we didn't use but looked like it was fully kitted-out, and then there was a lounge with a record-table and plenty of games. We listened to music (loads of vinyls supplied) and played a few of them, which was great fun, and then went across to the other side of the building, into another large communal room which had a guitar, piano and pool table inside. After my friend played a bit on the guitar, we had a few games of pool and went up to bed. The twin was a good size, with comfy waffle-styled sheets, and there was plenty of room for our luggage (a shelf-type area by the door, and under-bed storage). The bathroom felt new and modern and the shower worked great - I liked that the towels weren't the standard issue white you get at most places; they were a lovely brown colour. Loved how the rooms had numbers and Scottish clans - thought that was a cute touch! It felt like a lot of effort had gone into the building so we felt very spoilt. Will have to return and use it as a base to do some hillwalking, for sure!

Nothing. Our room was on the top (?) floor and there was a sort of narrow staircase up to it, so some people might struggle getting luggage up.

Lovely location. Decor was great. Facilities spot on. Host was perfect.
