"Never again - avoid if you are looking for a restful night"

3.0

On a positive note, the property is in a convenient location - close to Buxton and surrounded by beautiful hiking opportunities. It’s quite central for visiting caves, exploring scenic trails, enjoying local restaurants, and reaching other places of interest in the Peak District without too much driving. Not positive - When we arrived, the owner greeted us at the door. Almost immediately, I noticed a strange smell in the property but couldn’t quite place it. As we tried to ask questions about the place and its style, the lady seemed rushed, dismissive, and eager to leave. At one point, she almost told my 5-year-old son off for briefly leaving the door open to look outside because a heater was on in one of the rooms. Then, completely unprompted, she made a very inappropriate remark to him suggesting I was a “bad mum” for not letting him watch TV all the time. This is both rude and unacceptable - especially from someone we had met only five minutes earlier. She then left quickly. We had been told there would be complimentary breakfast items such as milk, bread, eggs, etc. The reality was disappointing. The eggs had no stamps (which is already questionable), the bread was cheap, white, and nutritionally poor, and the orange juice had expired the very day we arrived - truly unacceptable. The juice tasted awful, and I only realised it was out of date after checking the label. This made me concerned about the eggs too. For £150 a night, I would expect fresh, good-quality bread, more than six eggs for three people staying four nights, decent jams instead of sugar-loaded ones, and better cereals than the cheapest brands. The fridge temperature was 10°C when we arrived - far too warm to store food safely - so I had to adjust it myself. It seemed they were more concerned about electricity bills than guest comfort or safety.

The bed was another low point - rock hard, leaving me aching every morning. Sleep was made worse by the constant noise from a very busy road right outside (completely unmentioned in the property description). This was not the occasional countryside car; we’re talking heavy traffic, construction trucks, motorbikes, and machinery from about 4 am until late at night. I barely slept the entire stay. If you think you can relax in the evenings once your child is asleep, think again - the TV is awkwardly placed in the middle of the bedroom, right between the beds, with a sofa there too. The shower was also poor - low water pressure, hard-to-control temperature, and electric heating that made it impossible to have a consistently warm, pleasant shower after a long day outdoors. After spending a day out in the fresh air, I finally identified the strange smell from day one - mould. A strong, damp, “old” odour clung to everything, and all our clothes became slightly damp just from being in the property. We never saw the owners again during the stay. They didn’t come to say goodbye or check if everything was okay. On departure, they simply asked if we were packed and ready, then disappeared. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing stay - the smell of mould, uncomfortable bed, sleepless nights due to traffic noise, poor breakfast provisions, and an unwelcoming host. If you value good sleep, fresh air, and decent hospitality, look elsewhere. And if this property chooses to provide “complimentary” food, it should be fresh, safe, and of a standard that reflects the price charged.

"Highly recommended – we truly didn’t want to leave!"

10.0

We had a wonderful stay! The owners are absolutely amazing – kind, helpful, and always going out of their way to make us feel at home. They often offered toys to our son and made thoughtful gestures throughout our stay. The place is spacious and surrounded by beautiful fields and ponds. There are plenty of toys for kids and it’s a perfect base for hikes in the area. The house is impeccably clean – it sparkled! – and equipped with absolutely everything you could possibly need. It’s incredibly comfortable, with a lovely outdoor space to enjoy meals or coffee. The owner even provided us with food so we wouldn’t go hungry on arrival. Nearby, there’s also a charming café with delicious breakfasts. We felt like we were at home – but even better! Total privacy, full access to all amenities, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended – we truly didn’t want to leave!

"Lovely hosts, lovely cottage….. Would recommend"

8.0

Lovely hosts, nice quite location which was just a few miles from everywhere we wanted to visit. Bed was very comfortable and the kitchen was well stocked with the basics we needed.

Weather was terrible so didn’t get out as much as we would have liked. Room had a hint of dampness which could have been an issue if we had travelled later in the year.

"absolutely fantastic"

10.0

the attention to detail was amazing everything was thought about carefully

the tv in the bedroom was great with sky and Netflix but we would prefer as a friendship group to have it in the main living room. this is not a criticism as we did not watch much tv but sat night all 3 of us lay on bed to watch a film. 🤪 rather than sit in lounge.
