Le Grand Duc

A one night stay, a couple of hours' drive into France from the Tunnel. Beautiful period house from the outside, very eclectic and quirky on the inside (and a surprisingly lovely long garden for a built up area). A very comfortable room, an excellent breakfast, secure parking behind electric gates, and a reasonable price. Only a couple of minor drawbacks - we'd asked to dine in (which appears to be an optional service) but this couldn't be confirmed when booking (a few months in advance admittedly), and it turned out to be unavailable on arrival (the host was I think away). It's far enough from the centre of Valenciennes to necessitate a drive in for a restaurant in the evening (although a tram stop is outside the door), but we got an excellent and helpful recommendation for dinner in town (at L'escargot) from our host on the night.

The owner was so kind. All the staff was so helpful. The breakfast was great! The garden was beautiful, and the decor was eclectic and pleasing. There was a cat and a dog and we really felt like part of the family. The owner made a great recommendation for dinner, and we had a nice time at this restaurant.

The whole place invites you to relax. The decor is quite unique. Breakfast perfect. It's impossible not to recommend.

This was a great find! A beautifully decorated and restored french house. Phillipe the owner was a great host and we had everything we needed. Secure parking in the grounds, great gardens to relax in. Highly recommend and we will go back!!

We arrived at le Grand Duc not knowing what to expect from the moment you step into the chateau We all loved the fantastic decor and Phillipe was a welcoming host and couldn’t do enough for you. He explained there was a party on that night and there would be music and guests but were welcome to sit in the large beautiful garden and listen to the band which were excellent, he even sent party food to us. A great evening enjoyed by all. It has secure parking aswell. If your in valliciennes. Wouldn’t hesitate to return if in the area

My sister-in-law found this house for us for a one-night stay while we were visiting some friends of ours who live in Valenciennes. The owner of this B&B saved this magnificent home from being torn down and turned it into a B&B. It is just beautiful inside and outside. There is secure parking in front of the B&B and public transportation a hop (no skip, no jump, just a hop) outside the property gate. We brought our own wine to the sitting areas and enjoyed it before departing to dinner. It was fun to just roam around the sitting areas and look at all the funky decor. Reminded me very much of what you would see in a New Orleans B&B. Very eclectic, very amusing, and often makes you just think....what is it and what does it mean (the art). We learned the owner is an artist, sculptor, etc. and does most of the decor himself. Our room was very pleasant, with a large shower. The breakfast the next morning was at a formal table and lots of goodies to eat.

Wonderful quirky decorated former upper class home that the owner Philippe has obviously restored with love and thought for a delightful Bed And Breakfast. Check out all the decor most of which he made. The B&B had been decorated for Christmas and it was magical. Philippe and his assistant (sorry didnot ctach her name) met us at the door with a warm welcome. Although it is located right across the street from a tram stop even rooms overlooking the street as church mouse quiet at night. The tram is quite convenient if you want to to into Valenciennes city center but don't want to drive there and back to the B&B. Secured parking on the premises. Copious breakfast of fresh breads, jam, cheeses, freshly squeezed orange juice. No eggs were served although the owner might cook some up if you asked for them (we had plenty without them). There is the possibility to also have dinner if you reserve in advance. A very nice large back yard which would be lovely in the warmer months. A super cute cat that adores to have it's tummy rubbed.

We were just passing through on the way to cologne and this was a last minute booking. We found a charming eclectically decorated boutique hotel. We were made to feel at home and our host could not do enough for us. The breakfast was excellent in the beautiful dining room with a faultless service despite the language barrier. Will definitely visit again if in this area.
