My wife and I, plus a couple of friends have just returned from our 4 night stay at Hotel Cannero at the end of a hiking holiday staying at Lake Orta and two hotels on Lake Maggiore. The hotel itself is beautiful and the staff very friendly and helpful. Its location too is stunning and we loved the quiet elegance of both the resort and hotel. But..... there were things missing here which were standard at other hotels we have visited. Firstly, theres no kettle or tea/coffee in the room. Now I understand they say they want guests to enjoy the 'cafe culture' here.... but as guests we still also like to have this facility in our room for convenience - and we were supplied this at other hotels automatically. This does not mean that we dont also enjoy the cafe culture when out and about. Also, no free bottles of water were supplied in our rooms. Again... always offered freely elsewhere. The biggest disappointment however was the half board food. Our expectations were dashed as the quality of food offered fell far short of what we would expect from a 4 star hotel. Each evening we were given the choice of just one or two options for each course. Whichever was chosen was rather tastless and unappealing. We watched the other guests dining 'a la carte' as they were presented with far superior offerings over what was being offered to us. We really did feel as though we were second class guests. This really shouldnt be. We had been offered far better food at the other hotels on this holiday than we received here... despite the other hotel's lower star ratings. Also, our other walking holidays we have done in Italy over the years were not like this either. We accept that, as half board guests, there will be some limitation in choice... perhaps 3 or 4 to select from. But there is no excuse for serving downgraded food when the chefs can obviously create better for 'pay as you go' guests. Half board choice might be more limited... but not the quality. I note that other reviewers have mentioned exactly the same issue with the half board food two years ago. It seems that nothing has changed over the years. We will raise this issue with the holiday company that we booked through. This hotel should have been a marvellous end to our holiday. It certainly had everything else in abundance. But, unfortunately the food was a let-down and I wouldnt recommend anyone to stay here on half board. Bizzarely we had much better food at lakeside restaurants at lunchtime. If you do stay here, please dont choose half board.

We looked at three rooms before selecting a room on the top floor under the eaves (tip toe views). It is important to note that there are MANY different room types within each category. There are old and new sections of the hotel with views facing many different directions. It appeared that no two rooms were alike. Staff was gracious and helpful. The property is spotless.

The first room we were shown was spacious with two balconies, however the bathroom window faced the pool and had only a sheer window covering (which would have offered no privacy after sundown with the lights turned on). The second room offered faced the lake with a balcony, however it looked directly onto the ticket tour boat office, rather than out over the lake. Again, we declined this room. The final room was not what we expected, but ultimately suited our needs.

A truley first class 5 star holiday, we had a medical emergency which the staff dealt with, without any trouble. In particular Louisa was truley exceptionally helpful. When we left the staff came out to wish us safe journey home. We left feeling we had been treated as really special guest's.
