"A bit shabby, but safe, secure & well situated. No major grumbles. Good value. Would recommend."

7.0

In terms of the villa: The pre-arrival communication was excellent. The transfer transport we booked thru the villa was there to meet us when we arrived. We were welcomed with cold drinks and minimal paperwork. The photos, description, and guest reviews were all pretty accurate. The rooms (3x king and 1x twin) were cool and clean. As was the pool. The kitchen and communal areas were cleaned daily (tho not always at the best time!). The villa was secure and the local area very safe. It was also very quiet at night. In terms of the local area: The location is fantastic - two minutes walk from Batubelig beach (basically midway between Seminyak and Canggu) and close to a good array of amenities. There's a wide range of beach shacks, restaurants, and resorts (I highly, highly recommend the Oyster Shack for dinner and Caravan for sundowners) where you can watch the incredible sunset. The main Batubelig road has a pretty comprehensive selection of shops and services (also, a LOT of traffic and very little pavement!). The neighbourhood and beach are a lot quieter and calmer than Seminyak and Canggu. If you need a driver, I'd recommend Erik Tours +6287 860 678 700. He's very reliable, flexible, and friendly. For s3xy (men's) shorts and undies, see Eno at E&O on Jn. Batubelig. And for a satisfyingly sensual (men's) massage, get yourself to GTM Male Spa. In general, Bali is an amazing - and incredibly accessible (albeit not in terms of mobility impairment!) - place to visit. The people are incredibly welcoming and well-mannered. And it's still easily affordable for Australians. To wit: While we're generally expected and encouraged to barter, it's worth remembering that two years of covid restrictions and a c#nty government really screwed the Balinese over, so they're still playing 'catch-up' at the moment and a bit of compassion and compromise won't go amiss!

In terms of the villa: Everything was pretty much as expected tbh. As advised by other reviewers, it's bit shabby and spartan. For example, it has: Few soft furnishings and no sympathetic lighting; scaly; sluggish showerheads; a suboptimal number of sun loungers, coffee cups, and tea towels; and a slight eggy smell around the (pool. The a/c was dicky in one room (the twin) but we didn't say anything about it at the time. Other (very minor) frustrations included: A couple of stiff bedroom doors (and an annoyingly narrow entrance gate!); only bare basics in the kitchen; and some overly enthusiastic cleaners who arrived unexpectedly early a couple of times (but otherwise did a good job). But all in all, our experience was pleasantly uneventful and good value for money. In terms of the location: The only real downside to Batubelig is getting in and out. There's only one road. And by christ it's congested! (Like most of Bali) it also lacks consistent or coherent pavements/sidewalks. Walking to Seminyak by road was practically Sisyphean (but just about possible. Walking to Canggu (or the nearest sizeable (and very well-stocked, Western-style) supermarket, Popular) was impossible. There are heaps of Gojek scooters and taxis around. But I'd defo recommend allowing a chunk of extra time if you're going anywhere by road. And if you want to walk to Seminyak or Canggu... take the beach!
