"Exceptional"

10.0

Anniversary & Concert Trip! We came to Detroit to see the Toby Mac/Mercy Me/Zach Williams concert at Little Caesar’s Arena. Celebrating our anniversary, we wanted something more special than a generic hotel. The Frederick Stearns House was perfect! Beautifully restored to turn of the 20th century, the Inn was a wonderful mix of history & modern conveniences. I cannot say enough about the decor. Every turn brought something new to admire—architecture, furniture, artwork… The owner was charming and happily gave us a guided tour when we admired the authentic warming oven in the dining room. We noticed she even “dressed the part”, wearing a flapper-style dress on the first night and art deco blouses after that. We clearly saw how proud she was by her enthusiasm, her care of the Inn and the many small details, like the white-noise maker next to our bed to drown out city noise. We stayed in the Zinnia room which had extra privacy & a luxurious en suite with a deep jacuzzi tub and separate rainfall shower. We were delighted with our choice—especially after discovering the workers at the nearby Casio hotels were on strike! We definitely will be back! Close to LCA, Fox Theater, Windsor, casinos, Ford Field & other attractions.

"Detroit's gilded age elegance reclaimed"

10.0

The basics: large, clean, well-appointed accommodation with sitting room and bedroom. Sunny and quiet. Off-street parking, Close to downtown and to Grosse Pointe. Breakfast was buffet, hardy, healthy and timely. (made to order was not available) If you are looking for a comfortable convenient place to stay while in Detroit, Stearns House fits the bill-BUT there is so much more. Rachel, the proprietor, is passionate about history, architecture and landscaping and it shows in so many ways. Staying at Stearns House is time-traveling back to Detroit's gilded age. The place has been lovingly reclaimed with woodwork, leaded glass, antiques, and art work. Simply walking through the place is an experience. It is convenient, comfortable and ELEGANT. It is located on the edge of the Historic West Village and approx.a five minute walk to Belle Isle. Both are excellent for walks. 2 miles from downtown and 3 miles from Grosse Pointe. Stearns House will be our go-to for Detroit stays.

"Disappointing experience "

2.0

Disappointed and underwhelmed! We arrived on a day where the area lost power and continued to be off the next morning. I know this is no fault of the property, but I expected based upon price of room and advertising, that some attempt would be made the next morning to at least offer some brewed coffee and pastries that were picked up somewhere that had power for the guests staying there. The host of the Inn, was never to be seen AND the Inn had the nerve to charge full price for the room despite an email request from me that they refund the balance to me (based upon the situation and lack of service). I never even received a reply back.

"Amazing Stay Near Downtown Detriot"

10.0

I stayed at the Frederick Stearns House when I was in Detroit for a conference at the convention center. It's a historic mansion that was transformed into a boutique hotel. My room was recently remodeled and the trim and bathroom were excellent. The room was also huge with a king bed. The main staircase is beautiful and the art is all period. They also have an incredible full bar in the basement. It's an honor bar where you write down what you drank in notebooks tied to your room. Breakfast is freshly made and served in a formal dining room. Highly recommend this place and will stay here next time I'm in town.

"Hidden gem in Detroit"

10.0

Hidden gem in Detroit, I have stayed in many places in Detroit, this is by far the most exquisite and comfortable places I have stayed. Everything from the manicured garden to the bamboo bed sheets was perfect. The Host Rachel was wonderful and extremely professional.

"Very unique and beautiful house!"

10.0

This is a gorgeous house, and Rachel the owner/proprietor, has done an excellent job with the interior decorations as well. The breakfast was always good, the basement bar and tv area were nice to get away and relax and the rooms were well appointed. For my particular situation, I was coming in town for a conference which had basically sold out every hotel in Detroit. It was for work and I got approval late to attend so by the time I went to book something it was either in Canada or a 25 minute drive away, with all rental cars sold out as well. I booked this through my work travel agency and it showed as available. So I quickly booked as it was close to downtown. Shortly after I got an email from the manager saying the room wasn't available and there had been some sort of issue between booking.com and her reservation system that didn't show the booked rooms. I explained my situation, and she said they only room left was the one she was staying in, but that she would move out to allow me to stay there for my nights in town! She was very responsive and gave a tour of the property on arrival and I would definitely recommend staying here if you like a historic feel and are tired of the every day corporate hotels. It is not walking distance to downtown tho. So you will either need to manage with a rental car, Ubers, or there is a city bus that runs right by the house and a straight shot in to downtown. I would stay here again, could be a great place for team building or family get together by renting all the rooms.. there are only so many.. maybe 6 or 7?
