Holiday Inn Express - Hattiesburg West - Univ Area

I don’t usually write reviews but the hospitality here was so amazing I couldn’t not write them a review. We stayed for the USM homecoming weekend and the staff was very attentive and nice. The breakfast was fresh and restocked continuously. I also liked the layout of our room. We had a great weekend and will stay here again.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fantastic! The room was well lit.

The hotel is VERY hard to find. No sign at the entrance to the road it's on and no visible sign until you get right close to the building. It's also a maze getting into the place with parking lot entrances that dead end. Also the switch for the main light when you enter the room also works the lights at the night stands so when you turn off the bright entrance light, all the night stand lights go off so you have to find your way to the bed in the dark.

I stayed at this Hattiesburg,MS location twice in five days. The property is beautiful, staff is very pleasant and the breakfast is amazing...much better than other Holiday Inn Express locations I have stayed in recently. KUDDOS to the bacon at breakfast. It’s the real deal, not the flimsy stuff I have found at most hotels I stay at, regardless of brand. Wednesday night when we approached the building we could smell the air freshener about 10’ from the front door. It was a pleasant scent but not over powering. The same scent was present throughout the building. Our room was on the second floor and the scent was a bit strong but not intolerable. We quickly adjusted to the scent and had a good nights rest. Saturday night’s stay was a nightmare with the air freshener. We smelled it about the same place as Wednesday night, so that was not unexpected. When we got into the room on the third floor, it was very strong (much stronger than a few nights previously) but I expected to be able to acclimate to the level. After two hours, my head was throbbing from the scent so I searched the room for see if the room had an individual canister in the room. If I had of found one, I would have pulled out the canister so it would stop spraying into the room. When I did not find such, I called the front desk asking if the rooms had individual spray units or if the scent was piped through the ventilation systems throughout the whole building. The concierge (very pleasant) was not sure but thought it was through the ventilation system. I explained the problem I was having breathing (I do not have asthma or any other breathing issue) due to the intense smell of the air freshener. He offered some tylenol but I refused because I had some in my purse. He offered some tylenol but I refused because I had some in my purse. I told him I would gladly pay for another room that did not have such a strong scent. He called me back and offered a room right next to the one I was in but explained it probably would have same issue. After I refused, he searched for one on the first and second floors but said there was some scent in there. In effort to try to get some relief from the smell, I dragged covers off of my bed into the bathroom to try to sleep. The smell was not as strong in the bathroom but sleeping on a tile floor is impossible. I called the front desk to see if they sold Bendadryl, which they did not but the concierge offered me Nyquil or Dayquil. I googled and discovered that Nyquil has an antihistamine, so I bought some. The scent was not in the hallway out side of my room but when I approached the elevator, it was present again. Thanks to the Nyquil, I was eventually able to fall asleep. I was offered a small discount for the room rate. I realized this was probably as much as the overnight concierge could offer but I feel my room should have been much heavier discounted, if not comped. When we left the hotel Sunday morning, we could smell it in the ancillary parking area which is about 150’ away from the building. This parking lot is very brightly lit at night which is a bonus for women traveling alone. I would rate Wednesday night stay as perfect (10+) but Saturday is a 2 for the friendly staff, brightly lit parking and great breakfast.

My hotel room was spacious and beautiful. The hotel was quite busy but peaceful; there was a friendly atmosphere. The young man who worked the mornings was very sweet.
