Our favourite stay of the trip. Like a time capsule, the outside is rustic and the inside is spacious and intact. Rice paper shoji screens and tatami throughout. The owners are absolutely wonderful and the food was the most varied and generous we had. Definitely order dinner, as well as breakfast, but starve yourself for a few days before you arrive.

Difficult if you have trouble on steep stairs with a suitcase. The map directions on Booking.com don't work well so a bit of guess work was required.

If you want to be transported back to an older style of living and traveling in Japan, then this is the place. The food is excellent. The value is incredible. The staff are very nice. And it is fascinating and fun to stay in a building like this.

The staff don't speak English, so it was very hard to communicate with them. And we wish we knew that we had to order dinner ahead of time, and that it was going to be so far away from everything (although that was part of the appeal, and partly my fault for not doing enough research). Highly recommend renting a car, if you're going to stay here. It is a solid 30-40 min away from the train station, and no buses or stores or restaurants are anywhere nearby. It even takes a Taxi 10-15 min just to arrive.
