Daitokuji Sushicho

I read that in a lifetime you only get to meet around 80,000 people. What I loved about this property is that it’s a home. It’s not a hotel or villa. It felt like a true authentic ryokan and experience from someone who does not travel much. The sushi was impeccable and one of the best experiences I’ve had in my life. In one night and day, I’ve tasted over 30 different dishes. Each carefully selected dish reflected what a Japanese person would eat. From puffer fish to seasonal sushi (fatty tuna made me tear up how good it was), and grilled fish to firefly squid. I’m not a drinker but the homemade Japanese plum wine Jell-O shot was pretty good. This is a highlight of my trip and will remember this for decades. Doing the math and booking a separate hotel and separate omakase would have been more expensive for two people. If you’re a fan of the Japanese culture and raw fish dishes it’s a 10/10.

This area isn’t as close to train stations as other hotels. However we were able to take a bus. If you have a lot of luggage plan to utilize other transportation methods. I personally will budget a taxi if I get a chance to stay here again.

This was the most amazing stay in Japan. The room is truly beautiful. An amazing almost home stay, authentic Japanese experience. We loved staying here and loved the owners. The area was quiet and beautiful, and felt more local and less crowded. Run by a really kind couple who went over and beyond even driving us to the Golden Temple on and to Arishiyama at 7am and shown around. The food prepared by the most amazing chef was the best we have ever had. The sushi was incredible. Thank you for everything!

Such an incredible stay! If youre looking for an authentic Japanese accommodation, this is it! The home was beautiful, cozy, and super clean. We had dinner at the owners restauraunt twice while we were there and it was amazing. They were so kind and accomodating. They offered to take us to the bamboo forest one of our first mornings there and it was so nice to be there without the crowds. They were also so knowledgeable about the area and the history of Kyoto and gave us great recommendations for the area. Unfortunately we got sick mid stay, but this was honestly the perfect place to stay cozy and feel at home while under the weather. The owners offered us tea and were so helpful during this time. At the end of our stay they even dropped us back off at the train station! Truly amazing hosts. The location is in a pretty quiet part of town where there are less tourists. There is a beautiful temple nearby and many wonderful shops and restauraunts within a 15-20 minute walk. It felt very residential, safe, and quiet. Would absolutely recommend this stay and visit again!

The owners do have 2 small dogs (which are very cute!) But if you are allergic it would be something to ask about:)
