The staff were wonderful and made our stay (thank you Kentaro, Aung, and April in particular!). The food was delicious and throught out, and the location offers such a magical experience in the winter.

This is my second stay and I intend to return. I saw many important improvements since last year, and generally was more pleased with this stay. Communication was better. The restaurant now has separation between tables (some could use more btw), changing room for the outdoor baths was renovated, and the outdoor bathing area saw some improvements as well. It's not as crazy cold in the hallways leading to log houses as it was during previous winter. Facility management is fantastically prepared to have a standby engineer to handle a technical issue in about half an hour on Sunday around 21:00, very impressive given the location.

I probably should blame my lacking Japanese skills while trying to communicate in Japanese, but if a guest asks for a coffee and a dessert to be delivered to the room, he expects it to be done. Overall, staff attitude seemed to be very hit or miss depending on a specific person.

What a flop. We went for years ago to another ryokan in the valley and wanted to be back for higher level hotel, despite the long drive. We dram on reconnecting with nature in Japanese experiance. There was almost no one Japanese worker there, and the level of service was not Japanese, they didn't know not Japanese and not english. They served us food that we wrote we are allergic to. They placed us in the most far away room (50 stairs to get there) when we have a 3-month-old baby. The hot springs were closed alsomt all day for cleaning. Everything outside had provisoric piping and nets and it was the opposite from connecting to nature. We paid for ‘beef dinner’ and got only 50g of beef on top of the normal menu. They served us Japanese breakfast even though we ordered in advance English breakfast. and many other flops. And you can imagine how annoying it can be when you are stuck in the end of the world. We stayed in Japan over the years in probably 30-40 places, we remember 3-4 very bad experiences, thus was one of them.

The staff was very welcoming and the food was delicious! Lovely hikes nearby. Seems to be a wonderful location anytime of year.
